The tall cottonwood trees were in full fall color and layers of dark clouds covered the tops of the local mountains. After an hour of dirt roads I saw a very small sign at the foot of a bootjack fence. I assumed I was at the right place. Fortunately the gate was open and I entered a complex that I hoped would be as spectacular as it had been described. The golden grass and huge trees seemed to welcome me as I made my way along a dirt road. In time several buildings came into view. First a rustic garage, then a few smaller cabins and then a main house.

Great book on log cabins and homes

This is another great book by Ralph. A pleasant read with many quality photo's. Folks looking to build or decorate a log home will be well served with this book with its great ideas and inspirations.

Not "Real" Psychedelic Rock

It seems that the majority of the "reviewers" slaming this book are all grinding one of two axes, either "This guy wrote an ok book, but it isn't about "real psychedelic rock," or "I ain't never heard of any of these bands. What about the Grateful Dead?"
While Mr. Derogatis' definition of "psychedelic rock" may not satisfy everyone, it is at the very least internally consistant. This book deals with subject matter that is, by its very nature, subjective, so there will always be differences of opinion as to what should be included under the title of "psychedelic rock". With that in mind, Mr. Derogatis has presented a thesis that is internally consistant and defends it rather sucessfully. This is evident if one momentarily steps away from the bong and takes the time to actually read the book.
With regard to the second "criticism": If all one wants from a book is an affirmation that "The Dead rule, man!" there are plenty of other, less scholarly, books that will satisfy that need. (And those books have shorter words and lots of pretty pictures.) Just because one has not heard of the Flaming Lips, that does not mean that they are not a GREAT psychedelic rock band. Rather than bemoan the absence of references to the Jerry Garcia and Co., perhaps these critics could venture out into the world and check out some (gasp!) NEW MUSIC! Rock didn't die with the 60s.

Goring the sacred cows

I think the most fascinating thing about this book is the author's extension of psychedelic music into the modern era. Musical eras are connected. Styles don't grow up out of nothing. The author pieces together three decades of music in an interesting and understandable manner. Worshippers of the 60s may be put off by this book, but their persistent attempts to cling to cultural hegemony are as sad as a previous generation's battle against Chuck Berry! Jim Derogatis' willingness to gore the sacred cows of classic rock -- when such is deserved -- is remarkable...and I laughed myself silly at his lack of reverence. Readers should know that Jim Derogatis was schooled by Lester Bangs himself. A lot of the stuff that has come down from the 60s era as so called "classic" rock was often just more POPULAR, not BETTER than a lot of the forgotten bands of the day. What I sense is Jim D's willingness to look back with love and admiration at 30+ years of psychedelic music and not be bound in by the partisans of a single moment in cultural history. Come on folks...anybody who can put trip hop in a single history with the Dead is a genius.

Fair reading, but inaccurate history

This is a readable and generally interesting book about some of one rock critic's favorite artists, but for reasons cited in previous customer reviews, as a history of "psychedelic" music it is terribly biased and incomplete. In his introduction the author says "Like any history, this one is subjective." Well, yes, but real historians strive for objectivity nonetheless, and while there will always be differing interpretations of past events, particularly in histories of art forms, it is not that difficult to identify the major artists involved in the creation of this genre in the 1960s. The author dismisses so many of them that consequently, this isn't a history at all. If I were to write a history of the American Revolutionary period that claimed greater importance for Benjamin Franklin's nephew than say, Washington, Paine, or Ben Franklin himself, no one would take it seriously, and rightly so. This is pretty much what the author has done.

Serves its purpose!

I wad told that this book was more of a textbook for technical minds who work with motion capture systems first hand. Motion capture is a very strong subject at the company I work for. I had a general understanding of the technology, but I still felt that I was missing a certain level of understanding. I researched the subject on the Internet and couldn't find the results I was looking for, it seems that good information on motion capture is very limited. I picked up a copy of this book and I was very surprised. It is an easy read, I did not have to review the material several times to understand. The last 2 chapters were too technical for my understanding, but the knowledge I gained from the rest of the book is priceless. It's great to see the development of the industry, and all the diffrent technologies that exsist for motion capture. This industry will be exploding very soon so I suggest you pick this one up.

Take notes as you read! I found myself referring back to the book on several occasions.

Nice Motion Capture Textbook

Firstly, I have to say, I liked the graphics in the textbook. The other reviewer didn't but I found them to be pretty helpful -- they're cartoon-like and look like they're from the 70s.

My only grief was the size of the book for the cost mentioned. The primer takes up a good chunk of that along with some data tables, etc. Nothing horrid just think when I'd pay this much for a book I'd expect it to be wider.

A wonderful novel that will stay with you

The elegance of this 2002 Pulitzer Prize winning novel can be described best by one of his characters, teenager Tick, who decides "just because things happen slow doesn't mean you'll be ready for them." Miles, the central character of Russo's story, runs the Empire Grill in economically depressed Empire Falls, Maine. He ekes out a life hoping for parity: that his loyalty to the grill and to its wealthy owner Mrs. Whiting will result in his owning the business, that his patience with his daughter Tick will be rewarded with openness, that his soon-to-be-ex wife Janine will find what was lacking in him in her fiancé Walt, that his youthful failure to escape the town will have some redemption. But the complexity of Mrs. Whiting's interest in him remains out of his grasp, and the dynamics of Tick's life are largely hidden from him. Janine has a growing need for exactly what she hated so much about Miles. Worst of all, Miles sees himself as destined to remain a loser who gives and never gets. Russo explores the storylines of all these characters and others, allowing the reader intimate glimpses into their lives. In Empire Falls, relationships between husbands and wives and between parents and children are never simple. Russo's characters suffer in ways that are passionately ordinary - that is, until everything funnels into one explosive, extraordinary moment. I literally had to put the book down to absorb this climatic scene. That this scene was both prepared for and totally shocking speaks to the author's skill.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The characters are lively and sympathetic - even the ones that might be called villains - and despite the quiet nature of the narrative, it is a difficult book to put down.

Patient readers will be rewarded...

I will admit that about halfway through Empire Falls, I put it away for a few days. Although fascinating in its nuance and delightful in its humor, it was beginning to plod (so I thought) and I began to wonder whether it quite deserved the prestiguous prize on its cover.

Little did I realize the expertise of its author. He knows exactly what he's doing, bringing a complex tale to a slow boil. When the fever of rumination breaks toward the end, when something big really does happen, the reader is that much more taken by it because Russo has done more than introduce the characters--he has brought you into their lives, into their heads, and you genuinely care about their fate. Every one of the citizens in Empire Falls is a real, complex, believable person. At least once I had to remind myself that this heartbreaking tale, so vividly funny and genuinely tragic, is a work of fiction.

That Russo teases humor from sadness in such a natural, graceful way would make The Empire Falls a remarkable book. What makes it literature is its relevance, its reality, the fact that it might as well be a true story.

Russo 's Poignant Tale of Small Town Life Is Rewarding Read

This is my first novel by Richard Russo and I was captivated by his ability to breathe life into a diverse group of characters. From protagonist Miles Roby to his irascible father Max, his hauntingly sad mother Grace, his nemesis Mrs. Whiting, his touching daughter Tick, and many more, we are treated to people described so vividly they come to life and seem like the people we might know and want to either hang out with or avoid at all costs if we lived in Empire Falls.
There are too many plot lines to detail, but they all are brought together nicely and no reader is left with unanswered questions thanks to an interesting epilogue.
All the problems of seeking a better life but being relegated to the blue collar life of a mill town whose mill has long closed, are embodied in Miles Roby, reluctant proprietor of the town's grill. In the opening pages he sees his teen-age daughter Tick walking home from school with a hunched back weighed down by her symbolic backpack representing all the problems she faces---the dissolution of her parents marriage, a stepfather she despises, a widening emotional gap with her mother, the dreaded loss of friends and social standing, and being coupled with the school's most tortured and disturbed student.
The story moves slowly but the characters are so richly drawn you will be totally engrossed and hard pressed to put this one down. When the story does reach its climax, there are plenty of shocks and surprises and a realization that life is not perfect and its flaws are with us forever to either cope with or be overwhelmed by.
