About the Author

Jeffrey Lantis is an Associate Professor of Political Science at The College of Wooster, where he has taught since 1994. His research focuses on international relations, with a specialization in foreign policy analysis and international security. He received a J. William Fulbright Senior Scholarship for research in Australia in 2007, where he served as Visiting Scholar in the Department of International Relations at the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies at The Australian National University in Canberra and the School of Social Sciences and International Studies at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

Not an introdution to philosophy or Africana

Just a word to potential readers: if you intend on reading this book you should have a firm base of understanding in philosophical thought, concepts and philosophers. Additionally you should be well read in a core group of African American/Africana authors. Having command of one and not both makes for a challenging read(this is close to how I would describe myself, although one may argue full understanding of one implies some understanding of the other(which is what I was trying to gain)). Never-the-less I was able to gain some insight into the previous readings I had done and I appreciated the authors bringing to light the inherent racism of historical and indeed current philosophy. I think if I had been aware I would have waited to purchase this book until I had taken a few more philosophy courses and had a broader understanding under my belt, none of which i say to imply this is a bad book, in fact I'm probably a poor judge, which is exactly my point -this isn't an "Introduction".

About the Author
Stanley Payne has taught history in several universities, including Columbia University, UCLA and the University of Wisconsin. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a corresponding member of Real Academia Española de la Historia, Madrid. He has received various awards and prizes, most recently the Marshal Shulman Book Award of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (2005) and the Gran Cruz de Isabel la Católica from the Spanish government (2009). He has been co-editor of the Journal of Contemporary History since 1999. Professor Payne is the author of some twenty books and many articles, as well as other edited, co-edited and co-authored books. Most recently, he is the author of The Collapse of the Spanish Republic, 1933-1936: Origins of the Civil War; Franco and Hitler and Spain: A Unique History.

Pretty Cool Stuff

I read this for my Europe in the Age of War and Dictatorship Class. What a book! It's refreshing to learn about something besides Hitler, Stalin, or one of the World Wars in Europe in the Twentieth Century. This book essentially starts at the Finnish Civil War, details the Russian Civil War, then events in Germany and countires like Pourtugal and Italy, and the Spanish Civil War. Finally, it ends with a summary of the wars in Yugoslavia and Greece. This was a very exciting read and I would highly reccomend it.

Hard to read!

I needed this book for a history class that I took. I found this book extremely difficult to read and understand, and so did all of the members in my small group. That being said, I am not a history major and was taking the class for a general credit. I did not have a lot of background knowledge concerning this time period. The AI for the class did say in her presentation one day that she found the book very dry, difficult, and hard to read, and she was a graduate student in the area of history.

If you are really interested in this topic than maybe you will like this book, but I did not.

Very good read on several baffling stories

I stumbled upon this book by searching for the missing 411 books. Three of the cases I've heard discussed on missing 411 are talked about in great detail here and the cases of William Bradford Bishop Jr as well as Robert Eric Rudolph. Both of those cases I remember from unsolved mysteries. This is a great read for anyone wanting to imagine all the secrets those foggy heavily forested mountains have to hide.

Esta historia es una de las más hermosas y emotivas que leí en mi vida.
Que difícil resulta expresar con palabras cuando una historia te hace sentir… TANTO… Tanto amor, tanto dolor, tanta ternura, tanta desesperación, tanto… de TODO.
La historia es tan real, tan desgarradora y los sentimientos tan profundos, que te hace agradecer y pedir no estar nunca en una situación similar. Pero está tan bien contada, que a pesar de ser dolorosa, no resulta un golpe bajo para el que la lee.
Sara y Víctor son personajes entrañables y conmovedores. A Sara, en muchos momentos, quise abrazarla fuerte, y decirle que todo iba a estar bien. Sufrí por ella y rogué que encuentre una luz de esperanza que le permita seguir…
Víctor es…TODO. A pesar de estar tan roto como Sara lo dio todo de sí mismo para volver a empezar, no de cero, como él bien dice, sino desde donde sea, pero junto a ella. ¡Se robó completamente mi corazón! Me conmovió absolutamente su amor incondicional y su infinita paciencia y ternura para con Sara.
La pluma de Alice es IMPECABLE, y transmite, a la perfección, todas las emociones que experimentan sus personajes.
¡Amé este libro de principio a fin, amé la historia y amé a los personajes!
Aún tengo el corazón en un puño y las emociones a flor de piel.

Cuando el amor da otra oportunidad

No tengo demasiadas palabras para poder explicarme sobre todo lo que me hizo sentir este relato tan intenso.
No entender el por qué de las decisión que toma Sara y "ver" a Víctor que lo acepta casi sin luchar por el amor que sienten. Pero......
No pude dejar de leer hasta saber ese por qué. Y ahí todas las piezas se hicieron una. De otra manera, de otra forma, pero intentarán y eso es lo que cuenta.
Dejar sólo una frase, es muy mezquino de mi parte, pero elegí una, de tantas que señale en mi kindle: "No sé que nos deparará el futuro, no sé si mi vida tiene algún sentido o si me equivoqué en algún momento y no fui capaz de ver las señales y entenderlas correctamente..."

Que sentí en cada palabra lo que tus personajes iban viviendo.
Respiré y me quedé sin aliento a la par de Víctor y Sara...
Y lloré... lloré al sentir ese amor tan grande y al comprender qué era aquello tan grande que los separaba.
Es una historia real, como la vida misma...
