Review
Sew Electric combines craft, electronics, and programming and presents them in a wonderfully clear but whimsical way. The delightful projects should engage kids and adults of all ages. I wish I had this book when I was growing up, but I'm glad it's not too late for me to play!
--Joi Ito, Director, MIT Media Lab

I wish I'd had this book when I was young. I didn't figure out until college that designing and building software would satisfy the same creative urge as the sewing and art projects I did when I was younger. Bringing together craft and technology makes so much sense! Sew Electric will inspire the next generation of designers and engineers to dream big from early on.
--Jocelyn Goldfein, Director of Engineering, Facebook

With this book, Buechley and Qiu break new ground. One of the best educational resources I have seen in recent years - easy to understand, gorgeously designed, and showing a deep respect for young people's ideas and intellectual passions.
--Paulo Blikstein, Director of the Transformative Learning Technologies Lab, Stanford University

Purchase is for book only - not a kit
By "Dory"
I am interested in this emerging technology and specifically want to get girls introduced to STEM. I bought this as a gift and this review is to clarify what you get and what you need to actually make the products. I returned the book because of the overall price - so this review does not include a review of the book. The book is given 4 stars due to the price and the fact that you have to hunt down the materials. I did not spend the time to determine if more one of each item listed below is needed to make all the projects. Maybe someone that has made the items can comment on the total number of electronics required.

Book: The book arrives shrink wrapped. Printed on nice paper, slick and looks very easy to read.

Material List: The appendix contains two material lists. One list for electronics and tools and one list for craft materials.

Here is a breakdown of these two lists:

Electronics - book estimates cost of $80 (p 168-169)
Coin cell battery (3volt CR2032 - but see other reviewer recommends 5 volt)
Lilypad coin cell battery holder ($6) It is suggested you can make your own.
Conductive thread - $3
Lilypad Arduino Simple Snap $30
Lilypad Arduino Protoboard $10
FTDI Breakout Board $15
Lilypad Speaker/Lillybad Buzzer $1
Mini-usb cable $5
LilyTiny $7

Crafts (p 170-171)approximate cost $20-$30
Embroidery thread or "floss" $1
Glue (any kind) $5
Large eyed needle $2
Polyester filling $15
Fleece or felt $10 per yard
Aluminum foil $2
Iron on adhesive $15
Misc. scissors, paper, pencils, chalk ($5-10)

Kit available at:

as well.

I suggest if you are interested in this emerging technology, try it on your own first before giving as a gift.

Excellent book for all genders
By kilendra
Walks through the basics of Arduino programming with an arts-and-crafts twist. Projects include an LED bookmark, bracelet, and plush interactive monster. A great intro to the world of programming for kids or anyone who likes a more hands-on approach to computer programming.

This book is much heavier on the tech than it is on the sewing - everything is explained clearly and simply, perfect for kids or complete beginners.

Great idea, but not all of the projects work
By Jason Harris
Pros: The wearable electronics idea is a really great way to get interest in a wide range of young ones and adults. It is especially nice to get tech interest from the girls. The book itself it beautifully illustrated, well laid out, and contains lots of 'room' on the pages. This makes each page easy to read, as my eyes are drawn to the relevant sections of each page. Even though the book has plenty of technical information about electronics, it doesn't feel that way when reading.

Cons: Some of the projects don't work. The first 2, the bracelet and the bookmark, run off of coin cell batteries (2032) and a single battery of this type just doesn't have the power that will work with the Lillypad electronics. I had a group of adults and children make the bracelet project and not a single bracelet worked. No threads were crossed, all of the connections were solid. I did not have a multimeter with me at the time, but I did have a bag of 5mm LEDs. The 5mm LEDs worked just fine with with bracelets using coin cell batteries, where the Lillypad leds (tiny circuit board like) did not.

The book is beautiful and full of very enticing projects, but will require a fair amount of troubleshooting. A multimeter wouldn't be a bad idea. There may be problems in the thread, the electronics, the batteries, etc.. There might be some kids that will be interested in the 'find out what's wrong' part, but most are going to be captivated by the leds actually lighting up.
