What is the judge afraid of?
By Patto
This novel of 1914 starts out with a compelling image. An impenetrable fence, with an inner fence just like it, encircles the house of highly respected Judge Ostrander. No one enters or leaves the house but the judge and his black manservant Bela.
During the day the Judge goes about his judicial duties, but at home he's a well barricaded recluse. He's even broken off all relations with his only son Oliver, who lives and works in another city.
One day a veiled woman breaks into this forbidding seclusion. Mrs. Scoville's husband was condemned to death for murder by the judge. Her intrusion is destined to uncover terrible secrets.
There are several remarkable things about this novel. It's a hair-raising portrait of a small town in the grip of "the demon of curiosity." There are intensities of mood and innuendo that remind me of Henry James - but rendered in Anna Katherine Green's nervous, melodramatic style. And Green's central female character is a woman of great charm, intelligence and magnetism.
Green was known for her strong women characters. Mrs. Scoville serves as the unofficial investigator in this mystery.
If you've read Green's first novel, The Leavenworth Case (a fascinating book), you may know that it was used at Yale to teach law students the dangers of circumstantial evidence. Dark Hollow is yet another exploration of this subject.
The story has an intricate plot typical of Green. It did drag a bit towards the end, but Green is not a polished writer and I never expect perfection from her. Her lively imagination is sufficient for me, and I love the vintage flavor of her books.
Anna Katharine Green invented many of the conventions of detective fiction and influenced both Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle. She richly deserves a revival. Her books are often poorly reprinted, but the Dodo Press edition of Dark Hollow is quite good.

Good "Public Domain" book
By Maryann Anderson
Unlike some reviewers who seem very well acquainted with the works of Anna Katharine Green, this is the first of her books I have ever read. I sometimes had to re-read passages as the archaic phraseology and ponderous method of writing were very difficult to understand. However...because the story was so fascinating I hung in there and I'm glad I did.
The story is about a woman who attempts to prove that her husband was wrongly convicted of murder and was subsequently executed for a crime which she is sure he did not commit. She wants his name cleared so her daughter can marry the man she loves but refuses to marry because she does not want him to come under the stigma of being married to the child of a murderer. But in her attempt to prove her husband's innocence, the mother may uncover truths that she would prefer not to know.
This is an excellent book and I recommend it to those who will keep in mind that Ms. Green was born in 1846 and this book reflects the method of writing of that time period so at times it is very difficult reading. I will be looking for other books by this author.

A little different; still good
By Jennifer Burgis
As another reviewer has said, Green is not a polished writer, and expecting perfection from her is to expect far too much. That being said, most of her books are very enjoyable. This one is a little different from the detective story format that I most associate with her, but there is a female character that approaches (but does not completely fill) the detective role. In my opinion, the biggest flaw in the book is its slow start. I was literally more than halfway through before I really got interested in the story. But once things picked up, the rest of the book was great. This is certainly not Green's best work - far from it - and if you aren't a fan of hers already you will probably not enjoy it. But for fans of Green, hang in there through the beginning and it will be worth it in the end.
