Just Buy A (Paper) Workbook

I am very interested in studying Spanish, but this product really let me down. I would give it zero stars if possible.
First, this is not a computer program, it is merely a key code that gives you access to Pearson's online language lab with an eText of the book. I knew that when I bought it. What I didn't know, however, is that even if you pay the extra money to purchase a 24-month access, you can only access the online language lab (including the eText) while you are enrolled in a course that uses it. In other words, DO NOT buy this product if you want to study on your own or study after your class ends (such as over the summer, like I was hoping to).
Second, the online activities are not helpful. They are basically a workbook exercises put into a computer. There are no flashcards or anything like that like there are on countless free sites. You can match vocabulary and fill in the blank for various grammatical patterns, but there is no way to know why what was marked wrong was wrong. You get multiple tries, hints, and eventually corrections, but you do not have anyone to talk to about why a particular question was wrong. Since teachers are now relying on this auto-correction process instead of going over the exercises in class, they do not have time worked into their classroom schedule for questions to be asked about these exercises.
Third, the online set-up is awkward and does not work very well. I would expect something that I pay this much money for to at least look professional, but this does not even allow you to use keyboard shortcuts for accent marks. Additionally, every time I use it, it has stalls and delays that slow my whole computer down. I have to restart my computer after using it to get my computer to run normally again.
The bottom line: Nothing can replace the assistance of the teacher in asking questions about grammar and language use. For review of concepts and written practice, just buy an old-fashioned paper workbook and bring it to your teacher to ask your questions. MySpanishLab does nothing that a paper workbook can't do, and that way you can also access the exercises even after class has ended. I'll be taking my next level Spanish class at my local community college where Pearson's language labs are not required because they are a waste of time and money.

Needed for class

I had to purchase this item as a requirement for my Spanish 1 class in college. It goes along with the textbook. I feel this is very expensive item just to have access to the web site. The web site provides an e-book, but I had to purchase a book for use in class anyway. There are also extra activities and pre-post tests. As yet, I don't know that this was a necessary purchase in order for me to be successful in my course. It seems that this is just a way for the publisher to make a lot of money.

Very effective Spanish lab

I am using this online lab for my Spanish course. It is amazing how varied the activities are. It includes oral, aural, written and multiple choice activities and even word games. The content includes not only the Spanish language but information about the culture of Hispanic countries.
I purchased my copy at my local community college bookstore in a package that included this lab, Volume I of the Arriba textbook and the Arriba Student Activities Manual plus the Oxford New Spanish Dictionary for $100. You may be able to find the lab alone for a cheaper price than the current $75 here at Amazon.
I find that we rarely use the Student Activities manual, because all the activities are duplicated here in the lab. You don't need the Student Activities manual unless you need it for in-class activities.
The text is included in ebook form in this lab, but I use the text book a lot and rarely use the ebook. If you are studying on your own, you could get by with purchasing only this online lab. But unless you need to limit your expenses, I recommend using both the text and the lab. Together they are a very effective course. Besides, the lab is online active for 6 months, but you'll be able to use the paper book for decades. A good teacher always makes learning easier too.
I also recommend using the Spanish flash cards at quizlet.com. There are lots of flash cards sets there for the Arriba course. Search for Arriba and you'll find many sets organized by chapter and section within a chapter.
