Excellent Old Style back book

Review – molding a Mighty Back George Jowett

“Molding a Mighty Back” by George Jowett is a classic text on muscle development of the back. It is also one of a series by Jowett on “Molding a Mighty . . .” including Arms, Legs, Grip and Chest, along with his classic “Key to Might and Muscle.” Jowett idolizes (his own term for his level of respect for these two men) Saxon and Hackenschmit. He refers to Max Sick several times. He mentions Coulter, Shaffer, Kliment, Moygrossy, and Arco.

The book is old style, having been written in 1932. But is quite readable and easily understood. There are not set patterns, or actual workouts nor suggested weights. The diagrams are totally period and worth the price of the book. First we get an overview of the 4 major muscles of the back: Lats, Traps, Post Delts, Ext Oblique of Ab.. Jowett also later discusses the Serratus Anterior and the Erector Spinis as important. He refers to, but does not name the rhomboids. I did not see that he discussed the Teres.

Then mixed in with a lot of motivational material and references to the older strongmen mentioned above, are directions and diagrams for about 14 exercises. These are mostly dumbbell exercises. There are a few bodyweight, and a few self resistance exercises mixed in. Jowett spends 3 pages giving directions and motivation for the Bent Press, an old style press. (I have seen C Logan and T Stoezel push this recently on their joint DVD.) He only briefly mentions the chinup or pullup. The directions for the most part are clear enough. I occasionally had difficulty understanding if he wanted me to raise my arms in front of me or to the side of me, but the diagrams usually cleared this up. A few of these exercises seem to have fallen from favor, like tossing a dumb bell from hand to hand overhead (perhaps too many bruised heads?) or the unilateral lat pull over. Most of us are not doing the “will exercises” as Jowett calls them. Our term would be self resistance.

There are repeated warnings to develop the External Oblique so as to have a square lower back below the flare of the lats. This he considers essential to good workouts and good posture.

Jowett includes some warnings, like not forgetting the Erector Spinis, or putting too much weight in any exercise, especially the overhead press, or standing bent backwards. He only mentions the overhead press to warn us not to use too much weight as that increases sway back issues. In general he seems to like lighter to medium weights apparently going for reps and time under tension, although he does not use those terms.

For an individual wishing to develop his back, the exercises presented by George Jowett, mostly, would be very useful and mostly worth considering adding to a back program. For a collector of old strongmen books, this is a real jewel.

Jowett's Classic Course on "Molding a Mighty Back"

This course is a great example of how early 20th Century men worked out using common items around the house to develop tremendous strength without breaking their wallets or hurting their bodies with dangerous and illegal drugs. A classic reference for any workout library.

This book is the second of two volumes published in the context of the research project 'Protecting Young Suspects in Interrogations'. This EU-funded research project sprung from the observation that knowledge of the existing level of procedural protection offered to juvenile suspects during interrogation is limited. The research project aimed to fill at least part of this gap by shedding more light on the existing procedural rights for juveniles during interrogations in five EU Member States with different systems of juvenile justice (Belgium, England and Wales, Italy, Poland and the Netherlands). In doing so, it intended to identify legal and empirical patterns to improve the effective protection of the juvenile suspect. The project has been a joint effort of Maastricht University, Warwick University, Antwerp University, Jagiellonian University and Macerata University in cooperation with Defence for Children and PLOT Limburg. The results of the first part of the project - a legal and comparative study into existing legal procedural safeguards for juvenile suspects during interrogation in the five selected Member States - have been published in a separate volume (M. Panzavolta, D. de Vocht, M. van Oosterhout and M. Vanderhallen, Interrogating Young Suspects: Procedural Safeguards from a Legal Perspective, Cambridge: Intersentia 2015). This second volume reflects the results of the second and third part of the research project. First, it contains the results of the empirical research conducted in the five Member States consisting of focus group interviews and observations of recorded interrogations. The empirical findings of each Member State are discussed in separate chapters to provide an in-depth account of perceptions and practices in the context of each jurisdiction. Second, the country reports are followed by an integrated analysis resulting from the merging of the legal and empirical findings offering a comparative overview and combining the national findings into an integrated perspective. Finally, the book contains a set of guidelines - a framework of minimum rules - developed on the basis of the research project's findings. The guidelines and their additional explanatory remarks include recommendations for good practices and are intended to serve as an inspiration for promoting good practice in the context of juvenile suspect interrogations throughout the EU. The book is intended for practitioners, academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the area of juvenile justice and interrogation. Lucy Holliday’s first major work, a four-line poem called ‘The Postman is Very Good’, was completed shortly before her fifth birthday. It was such an enjoyable experience that she has wanted to be a writer ever since.

If you're an Audrey Hepburn fan, you'll love this book!

I bought this book off of Amazon a couple of month ago and got to it last week. I’ll admit the book started extremely slow for me but I’m a die-hard fan of Audrey Hepburn so I wouldn’t let myself give up and I’m so glad I didn’t! The book follows Libby Lomax through her disastrous adventure to be an actress. A career her mother has pushed upon her since a young girl. She’s not good at it, at the least. Her sister though is determined to be a star and isn’t afraid to step on the little people, Libby included, on her way to the top.

Libby has a disastrous family, a life that appears to be a mess, and is lost on how to find herself. Her only savior is her best friend Olly who she sometimes treats like ‘just some guy’. Olly helps her grab some old movie props out of a warehouse to furnish her brand new closet sized apartment. Including a giant old couch that turns into the center of the story.

Once moved into her apartment she starts hallucinating that Audrey Hepburn is there with her, giving her advice, and lounging around drinking cappuccinos all day. But when mysterious orders start showing up with Audrey admitting she ordered them, Libby starts to wonder if she’s really hallucinating or just going crazy.

I gave this book 4 coffees.

On set she meets very famous and very gorgeous actor Dillon O’Hara who to her surprise seems to be smitten with Libby and all of her disastrous ways. Even after setting fire to her hair on set and being fired. Dillon is handsome, famous, rich and comes with a bit of baggage. With Libby’s self esteems and confidence in the crapper she’s unsure just what to think of this new found relationship, if you could even call it that. Because of this Libby’s ‘bad luck’ makes for a great, funny read.

Why did I give it 4 Coffees?

The book started out extremely slow for me, I had a hard time powering through the first 25% but once I did the book got better, faster paced and more ‘fun’. I found myself finally becoming truly interested in Libby’s story and needing to know what happened.

What I Loved:

-Lucy is great at writing mortifyingly funny situations for Libby and that was a plus.1
-Olly, I want him to be Lucy’s night in shining armor! (and I think he wants it too!)
-Audrey Hepburn! Lucy is obviously a fan of Audrey and really writes her personality into her character. Even through writing Audrey’s classic elegant self shines through every scene she’s in.

What I didn’t Love:

-The beginning. I felt like it need more ‘action’ to really draw you in right from the first chapter. (but it didn’t stop me from finishing!)

What I thought of the Cover:

LOVE! The cover and the title is what drew me to the book.

My Conclusion:

I don’t think this book and author is getting the recognition it deserves.1 It’s a great book, fun with that old Hollywood feel written into it. It’s funny, and it’s the 1st in a series so I can’t wait to read about my next favorite star Marilyn Monroe. I’m dying to see what happens to Libby, Dillon, Olly and Marilyn!!

The series has great potential and I’m excited to have found this author. I was sad to see it was such a struggle to find information on Lucy! She’s great and even the publisher has no bio or pics or anything!? In my opinion Lucy is on her way to the top, maybe slowly but still, she’s on her way. I can’t wait to see more of her and her fab new series!!

Cute But Derivative.

I enjoyed this book, but it felt like something I had already read. Libby seems to be a mash-up of Becky Bloomwood from the Shopaholic books and Bridget Jones. Libby is accident prone, floundering in her career, a doormat in her relationships with her family and has terrible taste in men, but she is so likeable that I was willing to overlook it. It felt like it took too long to have Libby get her act together, so I am glad Audrey was there for advice and pep talks! I am glad there is a second book because there were many plot threads that feel incomplete, and I liked this enough to read the next one when it comes out. If you are looking for some light hearted chick lit, then this is perfectly fine.

I heart Audrey

Disclaimer: I didn't know this was the beginning of a series, so the ending was a huge let down. That said, this book is hysterical. So funny at times, it's almost slapstick. I adore Libby and the adorable Olly, as well as the spot-on characterization of Audrey Hepburn. Just reading about her made me want to be more stylish. As I said, the ending is a let down, but Holliday's next book comes out this fall (I think), so you won't have to wait too long ...

I used this book in my masters class and it was very easy to understand and worked well with my analytical brain. It gives you the basic anatomy and then builds upon that knowledge page by page. I purchased the UE version first and enjoyed it so much I purchased this one as well. It was not a requirement for any of my classes, but I felt the first book I purchased was so great. I was not disappointed in this book either. I admit I did not use it as much as the other one, but when I did I was not disappointed
