Could use some reviewing

Although the "C++ Weekend Crash Course" is a decent starting point for C++, it doesn't deliver as promised. Digesting the content of the book will take much more than the proposed 24 hours. Triple or quadruple that if you've never programmed with C++ before and you'll have an accurate estimate as to how long it takes to complete this book.
Good points: 1 - includes DJGPP and RHIDE (a compiler and environment) so that you can work on coding right away. 2 - covers classes quite thoroughly, and devotes several chapters to debugging. I can say quite confidently that I can debug my own code properly. 3 - 500 pages of info is bound to benefit you.
Bad points: 1 - The code contains errors. Once you figure out how to work around them (use "cin >> whatever" instead of "cin > whatever") you'll have a lot more success. It -is- frustrating for the novice, however. 2 - There's no real reference in the book. Unlike some titles, there's no decent list of functions, variable types, etc. You'll need to invest in something like that separately. 3 - Most sections are fairly chaotic. Although the author does have a basic pattern to his chapters consisting of "introduction of topic, practical coding, conclusion/summary", the practical coding section is a mishmash of coding and an assortment of unorganized points that the author couldn't put into a chapter.
Overall, some readers may feel confused after having read this book. A complete novice to C++ may still not know when to use a pointer instead of a global variable, and there were sections in the book that were too advanced for the time they were presented (such as bitwise operations). If you're already a programmer fluent in another language, this book might work for you. If you need to review C++ before an exam, this is your book. For complete newbies, however, skip this one.

It sounded like a great idea.

Learn C++ in one weekend? Wow! What takes other people a lifetime (or at least a few years to learn), I'll manage in one weekend! Great idea, except that it doesn't work.
I was also skeptical, but since I knew C and programmed in other languages, I thought I would at least be able to learn some basic concepts. And I tried really hard to complete the book in one weekend. But I don't believe it's possible; either that or I am much more of a "dummy" than other people. If for no other reason than just for spending money on a book that sounds like a marketing ploy rather than a serious programming book.
I would say that it is just feasible to READ the book in the time specified. Absorbing the knowledge, trying and playing with the programs supplied, would require a lot more time. I don't believe that anybody has learnt programming by just reading about it and that's another reason why I think that the title is grossly misleading.
Most programming books published these days contain mistakes (it's unfortunate that we have to pay good money for faulty products), but this one seems particularly bad. How is it possible that every single 'cin' is written as 'cin >' instead of 'cin >>'? Or does 'cin >' compile on the author's compiler? Are the publisher's deadlines really more important than releasing a thoroughly proofread book? More questions than answers.
On the positive side, the chapters are clear and concise, suitable perhaps for someone who needs to refresh his forgotten skills and the price is reasonable.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend this book to anybody who is serious about learning C++.

Perfect for the C programmer moving to C++

As a C (and other languages) programmer, I have spent hours in the bookstore reading 20 or more books on C++ trying to find one that would give me the C++ concepts quickly and simply - and this book does. I am quite certain that it will not be my last book on C++, it is NOY a complete referece by any means. I would also add that it is definitely NOT for someone with no programming experience (even though the copy says it is). While this book is not really what it purports to be, it is perfect for the C programmer moving to C++.

this book will make you think. It deals with a bunch of isms, Nazism, Feminism, etc., and the effects of them gaining power, and the effects on todays world.
It is a clearly well researched book, that I thought was worth every penny I paid for it.

Darn it, it is slipping into yuck

I have read through 5 Frostborn books as of this review. This was the most predictable of the bunch. So, in addition to the grammar errors of this series the plot I think is the weakest of books 1-5. I will still continue to read the series, I will still have to re-read entire paragraphs because clarity is not his strong suit, and hope that things improve.

Good story with the same failing as the Omnibus set I read earlier: no editing. Extra words, missing words, and incorrect words abound. Multiple errors on almost every page. Someone PLEASE get this author an editor!

Worth a read

This is the fourth book of a fifteen book series. If you're like me, you enjoy a long series more than a stand-alone novel or trilogy - IF it's well-written and original. This one is quite different; it's not often readers have an opportunity to discover interesting new worlds and entirely unique races, and there are many creative, unheard-of races in this series. I'd highly recommend the Frostborn series to fans of the various Forgotten Realms sagas or any other fantasy series.

Problems:

1 - Lack of editing. We've all been there. You're losing yourself in a great story, forgetting about reality for a little while, then BAM! There's a typo, extra word, or missing word to ruin the flow, and as you do an involuntary double take the real world comes crashing back. I've definitely seen much worse, but the number of errors throughout this series is still a shame. If the author would just read over it once, or send it to a beta reader before publishing, his readers would have a much more enjoyable experience.

2 - Repetition. Summarizing each main character's back story in every novel seems unnecessary; people aren't going to start from book ten and go backwards. Also, having characters explain a situation, then restate it multiple times is annoying.

3 - As others have pointed out, the hero Ridmark Arban is overused. There's a whole group of colorful main characters here, but no matter how chaotic the fighting may become, it's usually Ridmark who strikes down a major enemy or accomplishes something significant.

PRAISE:

1 - Originality! I'm 35 years old and have been an avid reader all my life, but I've never heard of at least half the races he introduces in this series. Bravo, Moeller! Even the races we've seen before are so different in this story, they easily hold the reader's attention.

2 - Character development. As the Frostborn series progresses, so do many characters' personalities. Moeller allows readers access to their inner thoughts, feelings, and struggles so we can watch them grow. Though the repetition can be frustrating at times, I still appreciate those details and glimpses.

3 - Length of series. Some reviewers have said the series is dragging on too much. Personally, I enjoy the stalling and side adventures. When I find a good series, I always hate reaching the end. Moeller keeps his characters busy with unique, entertaining dilemmas and journeys. I applaud his expertise in stretching things out while keeping his readers interested.

Sherry Parrish is a native of Birmingham, Alabama, and began her career in education in 1979. In addition to being an instructor for Math Solutions and Mathematics Education Collaborative, Sherry serves as a math coach for Mountain Brook City Schools, where her primary role is to provide math professional development. Sherry holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Samford University, is a national board-certified teacher, and is a recipient of the 1997 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching.

Fantastic Resource

A solid number sense is essential to success in learning mathematics. Number Talks provides a very structured, scaffolded approach to teaching strategies that help students build number sense. It is filled with tons of leveled problems (NO teacher prep here) demonstrating exactly what kids should be able to do with each strategy at each grade level. This is incredibly helpful when trying to quickly analyze where a child's "holes" are in number sense development. I work with gifted elementary students who are often adept at hiding their mathematical weaknesses, but once I sniff them out (a third grader who is still counting on), I can quickly and easily use Number Talks for an impromptu "strategy meeting." (I also love the rich strategy comparison conversations that come once students know multiple strategies.)

Unforgettable math book.

This is an unforgettable math book. It's for the visual learner — especially for the learner who can't stand silly manipulatives. The book only uses 2 kinds of manipulatives and they are both abstract (even the child who can't stand counting using silly colorful teddy bears will love it) and simple to make (even for the mother who can't stand DIY projects). I used velcro and paper to make one of them and I recycled the frame from one of my son's weaving projects to make the other. I loved this book even though I hate DIY projects -- I swear. Most importantly, this book made my son and I love to do math together. Basically, there are two kinds of pedagogical books out there: the ones made for classrooms or afterschool/homeschool situations and the ones made for parents. This one is exceptional because it is made for all the situations listed above. Don't be intimidated by the classroom lessons in the DVD. I am giving it only 4 stars because the section for 4th and 5th grades were too repetitive and similar to the K-3rd grade sections but if all you need is a great book for K-3, then this is for you.
