"Suicide is a particularly awful way to die: the mental suffering leading up to it is usually prolonged, intense, and unpalliated," writes Kay Redfield Jamison. "There is no morphine equivalent to ease the acute pain, and death not uncommonly is violent and grisly." Jamison has studied manic-depressive illness and suicide both professionally--and personally. She first planned her own suicide at 17; she attempted to carry it out at 28. There is, she asserts, a suicide every 17 minutes in this country. Identifying suicide as an often preventable medical and social problem, Jamison focuses attention on those under 40 (suicides by those who are older often have different motivations or causes). Citing research that suicide is most common in individuals with mental illness (diagnosed or not), particularly depression and manic depression, she clearly describes the role of hormones and neurotransmitters as well as potential therapies, including lithium and other antidepressants. Jamison presents fascinating facts about suicide in families and in twins, gender disparities, and the impact of the seasons and times of day. She also provides poignant portraits of those who have committed suicideAfrom the explorer Meriwether Lewis to a high-achieving Air Force Academy graduateAas well as stories from her own experience. As a person who has dealt with suicide ideation all my life, and understand why I have this issue. Alot of it is from early childhood trauma and emotional flashbacks that can hit you when something triggers it. In this book I felt like there was alot of misinformation about various aspects on the subject. I would not recommend this book as of real value to anyone wishing to understand suicide. There is a book I had found when I was younger that gave some really great in depth insight but it still didn't delve into certain areas but it was a great book. It's called the noonday demon.

Disappointing book. It only talks about suicide as if it were a mental illness. Well, some people get to that conclusion through a logical reasoning. It's a choice. The difficult part is, why these people think like that? What can we, as a society, do, so more sensitive people can cope with such a difficult burden?
I just think it's sad someone has spent so long researching and still hasn't understood that many people don't have any mental issues. They just can't stand life. Because we all agree, that life is hard.

Quite resourceful. Well-researched, powerful; What shocked me was (on Pg 111):

“A special acid that would dissolve bones quickly was imported from China”
(meaning erasing of Mass graves ASAP, including both innocent Sinhala youth of 70's and Tamils?? )

Every page is a revelation

Before I commence with my review I feel I should state that my knowledge of the Sri Lanka was limited. In 240 pages author succeeds in taking us through what happened in Sri Lanka. The strange thing is that it is almost unknown. People know so much more about Gaza and Bosnia but not about Sri Lanka. The lives of innocent 70,000 Tamils appear worth less than the lives of other humans in the world. Well written. Every page is a revelation. I whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone interested of Sri Lanka.

This is a difficult and painful book to read

A must read - Raw and compelling - A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths a statistic.

Thank you Mr Grant for writing an incredible book! This is a difficult and painful book to read. Of course, reading about such terrible inhumanity does make one wonder about our species as a whole. Are we humans really this awful? Will anyone answer?

Perfect desert island fare, huge range, its own Web site!

The book's designer, Bruce Mau, has as much to do with its impact as the famed architect author, Rem Koolhaas. This is a "drop-in-anytime" book. Open any page, and let yourself go on the main story, squint at the working drawings, cruise the side margins gleaned from a multitude of literary and professional sources.
I compare it to a rich Web site... you enter anywhere and link to new topics and images in a surprising and stimulating way. As a personal challenge, I attacked the book in the most plebeian fashion- from cover to cover, an effort spanning several months, hence true desert island satisfaction.
Certain of the stories have been reviewed by others as fairy tales, and I did read them as such. Imagine my surprise reading other architectural histories to find they were virtually true! The graphically-assisted view of project relationships is welcome to any project planner.
After a dose of Koolhaas' generic city, you will see your world through new eyes. Despite its uncomfortable bulk, S M L XL contains enormous energy and insights, and is not for the architect or urban planner only. Also, despite its enormous bulk, it is well bound and will not disintegrate as you lug it all over in the significant amount of time it will take you to finish it! Compliments to Monacelli for publishing it, and risking our tolerance for a behemoth edition.

swishy graphics w/ content seen thru forest of typography

Not having actually read the book, but merely a chore just to browse thru it, i believe that this book is compiled as it was meant to be used. the swishy graphics are seductive and the essays are short enough to appeal to the short attention spans of the mtv generation of young architects (to which i belong, lest anyone critique this critique on that basis).i do agree that for content rem will not be able to surpass his manifesto delirious new york- but have you met anyone who has actually read that? all in all, i recommend pooling resources and buying this tome as a group read, or perusing it at the local library, if it is actually available

A chaotic book with very little real architectural content.

When I heard of S,M,L,XL, I was ready to be amazed. I was
expecting an incisive analysis of modern architecture on
different scales, filled with examples of projects, both
dreams and real buildings. Instead, the book is a chaotic
assortment of rubbish -- excerpts of floor-plans, littered
with photos which are hopefully intended to create a mood
rather than convey a
sense of the building. All in all, innovative typography
and an overtly abstract approach take the place of real
content. For me it was a great disappointment, and after a
first read, its silver spine is all of it I'm likely ever
to see.
