About the Author

Jim Doherty is the Chief Marketing Officer at CipherOptics. Before joining the CipherOptics team, he held leadership positions with Symbol Technologies and Cisco Systems. He has more than 16 years of technical marketing and engineering experience and has led various marketing campaigns for IP telephony, routing and switching solutions, and network security solutions. He is the coauthor of the Networking Simplifiedseries, published by Cisco Press. He is a former Marine Corps sergeant. He holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University and an MBA from Duke University.

Neil Anderson is the Senior Manager of Technology Systems Engineering with Cisco Systems. He has more than 20 years of broad engineering experience, including public telephone systems, mobile phone systems, Internet, and home networking. At Cisco, his focus is on business networks in the areas of network architecture, wireless, security, unified communications, and emerging technologies. He is the coauthor of the Networking Simplified series, published by Cisco Press. He holds a B.S. in computer science.

Book for novice

I was disappointed in this book since I expected it to be more like a Cisco cheat sheet or refresher. This book is for novice only. It describes very basic/beginner materials for easy understanding. If you have general knowledge and experience in networking, this book will not benefit you. Also it's not really Cisco Networking Simplified, it's general networking simplified...not much Cisco in it. However I'm sure everyone will find something interesting in the book. May be nothing new but some theory for general understanding of "noteveryday" technology; also interesting facts, history and statistics of different technologies.

A very good book for tech managers

I found in this book everything that I needed to know about networking technology. I was looking for a book with updated information about connecting computers in network using switches, routers and etc. and this book was very helpful. It tells us much more about networking in general than about Cisco's networking products. I recommend it for tech managers that need a very good technology overview, also clearly written and well illustrated.

I purchased this book to learn more about networking, and you will learn
quite alot from it. Every subject is covered, from the beginning of the
Internet to present-day systems, including legacy devices and topologies.
If you are looking for a book to show you how to network YOUR setup, this
can help, but is not the focus and subject of this book.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants a good understanding of network-
ing principles, methodologies, and implementation from a LAN to WAN scale.
This book does require some intelligence regarding the subjects, and will
be useful for an intermediate to advanced user.

Got this for a 7 year old almost 2nd grader ...

Got this for a 7 year old almost 2nd grader who has a bit of a lying problem. We have her read it to us every time she doesn't tell us the truth. She'll be so sick of it, and it has improved both her reading, word recognition, and fibbing. ;)

Unsurprising but helpful advice from someone who has been there.

As the father of a high school junior, I have a front-row seat for the pursuit of the college dream. Like many kids near the top of their high school class, my son is a shoo-in for acceptance to the vast majority of colleges in the U.S. But when it comes to competitive scholarships and acceptance to that small percentage of elite schools, the odds are not in his favor. Truth be told, the odds are against anyone getting into some of the elite colleges, with acceptance rates in the single digits.

Into that fray enters Aayush Upadhyay, a recent Yale grad who has crunched some numbers and has valuable insights for high school students whose sights are set on the Ivy League. In Behind the Ivy Curtain: A Data-Driven Guide to College Admissions, Upadhyay breaks down admissions data culled from collegeconfidential.com to give applicants some insight into what matters for those seeking to join the ranks of the Ivy League.

None of Upadhyay's conclusions will shock the reader. The higher the rank, the higher the test scores, the better the chances for admission. He sheds some light on some of the more subjective elements, like extracurriculars (multiple years in one activity tends to beat short tenures in multiple activities), but, again, nothing too surprising.

Upadhyay's analysis and conclusions are worth reading for applicants to Ivy League schools. I was left with the feeling that unless GPA, class rank, and test scores aren't top-notch, the rest of the application will never matter. Behind the Ivy Curtain feeds into the growing perception of ambitious high school students that admission to an Ivy League school is the only route to success in academics and life. Combining quantitative analysis with qualitative experience, Behind the Ivy Curtain presents an information-dense overview of the college admissions process for high-achieving students and their parents.

For students aiming at top colleges, Behind the Ivy Curtain helps answer questions such as:
* How many AP exams should I take?
* What score do I need on the SAT / ACT?
* What role does my guidance counselor play in the admissions process?
* How does a college admissions committee handle my application?
* Do I need to go to a private or public school?
* Should I try to be recruited as an athlete?
* How important are extracurriculars vs. a top GPA?
* How should I approach the essay portion of the application?

Upadhyay's casual and simplifying voice makes it an easy read (~2 hours start to finish). The data is there for you to dig into, but the takeaways are also neatly summarized if you'd rather not. I recommend Behind the Ivy Curtain to all kids applying to college, and their parents. It's a small investment of time, and there's a lot of useful stuff in there.

Upadhyay's short, information-packed read is probably the one of the best two hours you can spend on college admissions research. It gives students data-backed answers to questions everyone asks, like "Should I retake the SAT?" or "How important are those volunteer hours?". The quantitative bent definitely makes this book different from others, so for the more analytical student the information is both easier to parse and more convincing. Upadhyay's writing style is casual and concise, making the book entertaining while being informative.

This book is definitely most useful when read as a high school underclassman who is serious about getting into some of the best schools in the country. It gives a lot of advice about how to use your high school years, so reading it as a college senior, while still useful for the essay and testing-taking sections, doesn't give you opportunity to change behavior based on all the statistics and ideas covered.

Shannon McRae, PhD has a graduate degree and a long background in psychology as well as a doctorate in holistic nutrition from the American Holistic College of Nutrition. She has an ongoing feature column about intuitive medicine and energy healing in the Well Being Journal.

you will find this book of great value. Maybe it's me

For 30 years I have read everything I can find on healing in relationship to quantum physics. Some books have opened my mind, some have offered me only a sliver, it all depends where we are on our path and what we are ready to hear. McRae just blows it out of the ball park on this one! The sense of hope and possibility is present in every sentence. You can take it, or leave it, it's your call, your mind, your desire to heal. But if your desire to heal is sincere, you will find this book of great value. Maybe it's me, maybe it was just time for things to really click for me, but I do think this book helped facilitate that key finally turning. I've been vigilant about my own thoughts that are counter to healing in a way that is finally cutting through the mire and moving towards something healthier, as a result of reading this book. Different healers reach different people, for me this book opened wide the confirmation that we have the ability to heal ourselves. Is it easy? No, it takes vigilance and constant monitoring of our thoughts, but if we are willing to do so, this book greatly assists in helping us move in that direction. If you want proof, or think that things in the quantum are too iffy, please still consider giving this book a chance. If you wait until you %100 believe you can heal yourself, you are probably waiting while your healing is on hold waiting too. If we have sincere intent to heal, this book will get you started on that path.

I haven't gotten myself to be able to read comics online yet so this hardcover collection of Tom Scioli's web series AMERICAN BARBARIAN was greatly anticipated! I loved it! Scioli's imagination is completely let loose and on display! AMERICAN BARBARIAN is a story of revenge featuring a warrior in a post-post-apocalyptic future (I love that description). How can you not love a comic with a villain named Two Tank Omen?

I really enjoyed the format and feel of the book (slightly smaller than a typical modern comicbook). If you're already familiar with Scioli's work, this is can't miss. If you're not familiar, get acquainted!

Tom Scioli is one of the best artists in comics because he understands that the visuals are the means of delivering a narrative and not an end unto themselves. His art is quite good and evokes an earlier time when comic books knew the difference between seriousness and grimness. His concepts are fresh and delivered with an obvious enthusiasm of an artist fully engaged in his work.

Silly, ridiculous fun

Great silly fun. This is part Thundarr the Barbarian, part He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, part Star Wars, part Fire and Ice, all done as if it were channeled through Jack Kirby. The art looks like a 13-year-old did it trying very hard to imitate Jack Kirby, and for some reason I don't mean that in a bad way because for some reason that means my eyes never get tired of looking at it--there is always something interesting, shocking, funny, or amazing on every page.

The March: Without opposition or firing a shot, the Mormon infantry tramped across the width of what was then northern Mexico and built a road as they went-Cooke's Wagon Road. Their explorations helped influence the decision in 1853 to acquire the Gadsden Purchase in southern Arizona.

Service in California: The good behavior and industry of battalion members accomplished far more than the muskets they shouldered in pacifying California. They defended ranches against raids by hostile natives, they sank wells, manufactured bricks, and built new buildings at Los Angeles and San Diego. The command arrived too late to take part in the last battles of the American occupation, but just in time to carry out President Polk's orders to treat the people of the region as fellow citizens, not as subjugated enemies, reversing the damage done by Robert Stockton and his underlings.

The Gold Rush: Battalion veterans in California witnessed an event that would transform the nation almost overnight and touch off a massive population shift west that still continues. As employees of James Marshall and John Sutter, two of these men-and two only-would record the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill and the day it happened, 24 January 1848. Will Bagley is an independent historian who has written about overland emigration, frontier violence, railroads, mining, and the Mormons. Bagley has published extensively over the years and is the author and editor of many books, articles, and reviews in professional journals. Bagley is the series editor of Arthur H. Clark Company's documentary history series, KINGDOM IN THE WEST: The Mormons and the American Frontier. Bagley has been a Wallace Stegner Centennial Fellow at the University of Utah and the Archibald Hannah, Jr. Fellow in American History at Yale University's Beinecke Library. Blood of the Prophets: Brigham Young and the Massacre at Mountain Meadows has won numerous awards including a Spur Award from Western Writers of America, the Bancroft History Prize from the Denver Public Library, Westerners International Best Book, and the Western History Association Caughey Book Prize for the most distinguished book on the history of the American West. So Rugged and Mountainous: Blazing the Trails to Oregon and California, 1812-1848 is the first of four volumes of Overland West: The Story of the Oregon and California Trails Series.

Independent historian David L. Bigler is a Utah native, a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and a University of Utah graduate in journalism. He retired as director of public affairs for U.S. Steel in 1986 to devote full time to Mormon and western history. He is a fellow and an honorary life member, Utah State Historical Society; a former director, Utah State Board of History and Friends of University of Utah Libraries; and past president, Oregon-California Trails Association. His books and articles have won awards from the Utah State Historical Society, Westerners International and The Mormon History Association. David Bigler and Will Bagley are two of the nation's leading experts on the history of the Rocky Mountain Mormons.
They have combined to present an extremely readable history of the Mormon Battalion - an army unit that traversed thousands of difficult miles and never fired a shot in anger.
Extremely well researched, ARMY OF ISRAEL is must reading for those interested in the many facets of 19th Century Mormonism.

The significance of the events from 1846-1848 in the history of our country has long been overlooked. Education in many schools jumps from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War; completely disregarding the major influence the Mexican-American War had on our nation. Not only did the war result in the United States increasing it's territory by over a third, but the wealth of mineral resources in California, Arizona, and New Mexico helped to propel the United States to global prominence in the twentieth century. But if the war as a whole is neglected, the unique contributions of a single group to the formation of the U.S. border and to the development of American western migration is almost completely forgotten. The Mormon Battalion, which marched in 1846 from Iowa to California, blazed a trail that would define our nation's borders and history. Published in 2000, ARMY OF ISRAEL: Mormon Battalion narratives gives a fresh look at this regiment's history from their own viewpoint. The editors are both historians with backgrounds in journalism and a special interest in the American Far West. Mr. Bigler is a past president of the Oregon-California Trails Association, founder and first president of the Utah Westerners, and has served on the Utah Board of State History. He has also edited the diary of his great-uncle Azariah Smith, one of the members of the Battalion. Mr. Bagley has edited several books and narratives on the American West and serves as the chief editor of the series KINGDOM IN THE WEST: The Mormons and the American Frontier. The narrative focuses primarily on the events encountered by the battalion during the actual march from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Los Angeles, California in from June 1846 to January 1847. Thought the infantry regiment made the entire journey without firing a single shot, the march was the longest in the history of any American army. It's legacy, however, is much greater than simple trivia. On its way to California, the battalion occupied Santa Fe, Tucson, Yuma, San Diego, and Los Angeles, instituting the first American military presence in each of these cities. They were also to first to construct an east-west wagon road, which intersected the great mountain ranges of the Southwest. Previously, Mexican and Native American merchant traffic traveled north-south along the valleys. The roads were a major factor in the mass migration to California that would soon follow. The roads continued to be used until 1880, when the railroad was built along the same path. Interstate 10 now follows almost the exact same path that the company forged over 150 years ago. The little "Army of the West", made up of five regiments of one hundred men each, made President James Polk's vision of a continental nation into reality. In the Introduction the editors claim, "Only in recent times have historians begun to realize the achievements and the important role the Mormon soldiers performed in California and Western history. The narratives found in these pages reveal ... the significant part these men and women played in that history" (p. 29). Fortunately for us, a great number of the soldiers kept account of their experiences in pocket diaries, which many then transcribed into more detailed journals after the war. These documents not only provide us with detailed information on their day-to-day activities, but also give us eyewitness accounts of the major events of this period - the occupation of Northern Mexico, the opening of major transportation routes, and the discovery of gold in California. The book proceeds chronographically, beginning with the situation surrounding the Mormons and the U.S. government at the time. The Mormons were in need of money to finance their exodus to Utah; President Polk was in need of an army to occupy California. Polk's concern for the West Coast was not over Mexican possession but of the threat of British invasion. Once the deal was brokered, the Battalion set out almost immediately, under the command of Gen. Stephen W. Kearny and Lt. Col. Philip St. George Cooke. The editors utilize a great number of original documents from James Polk's presidential papers, War Department records, and Congressional archives. Correspondence between the Mormons and the government is also well recorded. The narrative then turns to the march itself, which is presented mostly by means of diaries and journals from the soldiers and their officers. The editors employ a framework that keeps the narrative interesting and ties the various accounts together, giving historical background for each event. This approach enables them to let the documents stand on their own merit but also provides them with the opportunity to accentuate events that demonstrate the importance of the Mormon Battalion campaign. The editors clearly explain the ramifications of events not only during the war but even down to our time. The result is indeed convincing. They make proper use of their source data describing not only the events but also their historical significance. The narrative is interesting and informative. An effort is made to include the journals of women who traveled with the army, as well as to maintain a balance between purely historical documents with entertaining stories. On the other hand, although the stated scope of the book is to present the experiences of the Battalion from their own perspective, there is very little information on Native Americans and even less about the Mexicans. Additionally, though the editors make an attempt to curb their glowing assessment of the Battalion by introducing a few arguments that call the Mormons' intentions into question, the effort is half-hearted and falls short of credibility. What remains is a biased depiction of the campaign that nonetheless does not detract from the authenticity of the source documents. The end result is an extremely readable book about an extraordinary group of people who played a part in our nation's history that often goes unnoticed.

David Bigler and Will Bagley successfully collaborated to bring together a series of previously unpublished documents, as well as some published ones, in an outstanding collection of firsthand accounts and other primary sources on and about the Mormon Battalion's epic 1846 U.S. - Mexican War march and their role in securing the Southwest from Mexican control and claiming the territory that would become the states of Iowa, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah -- thereby fulfilling the mandate inherent in the concept of "Manifest Destiny". Several eye-witness sourced perspectives are provided including the journal of teenager William Pace, letters from some of the women associated with the battalion; as well as military and government correspondence. Army Of Israel: Mormon Battalion Narratives is a superlatively presented and informative contribution to American history in general, and the role of a unique military command in particular.
