Not everyone desires to keep climbing the ladder. Some prefer to be individual contributors with deep expertise. After awhile, they can hit a rut especially those working in professional services. I've been a fan of Alexander's work since discovering several of his professional services series. His writing style is conversational with a scoop of humor added. And that style carries over in this book. Often, I find advice related to professional services to be stiff, boring and difficult to follow and implement. Child of the Storm

The story takes place in Zululand, Africa. It happens so that Allan Quatermain stops by his Zulu friend's kraal (to those of you who never read Haggard, Kraal=household) to find that yet another friend is madly in love with the well known beauty: Mameena, or, in other words, Child of the Storm. Allan is curious to see this well known Mameena, but his friend who is in love with Mameena (his name is Saduko) goes on a crazy battle to win 100 cattle for Mameena's dowry. After going with Saduko on his quest and helping him win 600 cattle, Allan meets Mameena, and determines she is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen, and, though at that time Africans were thought of as savages (most unjustly, I have to add), Allan, after observing some treachery done by Mameena while pretending to be unconscious, after knowing she was false, cannot find any reason to resist her love to him, for indeed Mameena tries to engage him in a marriage, but Allan remembers her treachery and tells her no. Many adventures follow after that, until the Zulu King declares Mameena a witch, and Mameena pleads guilty. It is not the kind of Salem witchcraft that is talked about here. It is more like herb-knowledge and doctoring that the Zulus call witchcraft. After recieving her death sentence for many more offenses, including causing a civil war and it's outcome, Mameena makes a last wish. The last wish is... You'll have to figure out this as you read along with the mystery of Mameena's character. Suggested background books: Any Allan Quatermain book. My 7th book by Haggard was not a disappointment. He writes as if creating a work of art. Let him lead your eyes around this canvas set in Africa complete with multi-dimensional characters who will both attract and repel. Be prepared for the depiction of tribal wisdom and folly sketched within and without.

My bar is high when it comes to ratings. I try to compare all authors of all times. HR Haggard is at the top of the adventure fiction genre. He takes the reader into the unstable history of Africa where indiginous tribes, english, dutch and portugese settlers carved out a continent still in flux today. Haggard brings characters from all these groups to life with a realism rarely found. As described by the other reviewers this story is 2nd in a series. The books take the reader through the Zulu tribes violent history with the addition of fictional characters full of adventure, passion and commitment. This is a cannot stop reading book in a cannot stop reading series by a cannot stop reading author .

About the Author
Hector Garcia was born in Spain, in 1981. What I've Been Waiting For

An unabashed Japanophile, I've collected a fair number of books on the country over the years, searching for that one book that would offer both decent photography and meaty content. While that's a lot to ask, I think "A Geek in Japan" comes the closest to fitting the bill.

Die-hard Japanophiles probably won't encounter too much in the way of new information here -- the strength of the book is purely in its presentation. Within the pages of this slim volume, you get hundreds of color photos of every aspect of Japan, every one of them dynamic, without the usual "travelogue" pics so many books have resorted to. I was particularly pleased to see the author has taken the "little bit of everything" approach, which means you can open a page at random and find something interesting to read. This isn't a single narrative, but rather made up of page-long sections covering everything from food to Japanese company dynamics. Bonus points for a two-page spread that demonstrates the evolution of "Densha Otoko" from anonymous forum posting to full-fledged Japanese multimedia phenomenon.

A Hyper-Surrealistic Guidebook To Japan

When I picked up "A Geek in Japan" I didn't know what to expect, nor did I particularly expect to find a book I'd enjoy or find useful, but I was wrong. I was preparing for a three week trek across Japan and was reading all I could get my hands on. Despite not being into manga, anime, or (especially) J-Pop, I found this book to be interesting and topical. García is a brilliant young writer (he has a MS in Software Engineering and worked for CERN…) and is great at breaking ties with stiflingly stodgy travel guide sensibilities and writing about contemporary subjects in a contemporary way. The photographs and illustrations are excellent, and his viewpoints are intriguing; most of all his advice is sage and worth paying attention to. I found Chapter 11, "Visiting Tokyo" to be among the most useful and relevant things I read in preparation for my time spent there. I actually carried this book with me to Japan (and home) but I got the most use out of it preparing for the trip.

If you are looking for a traditional guidebook to Japan, Fodor's has an excellent offering (I have theirs too,) but if you want a more youthful guide to contemporary Japan that is entertaining while still being useful, "A Geek in Japan" will be certain to pique your interest.

Great book that fills the gaps left from all the Japanese travel guide books, if you want some of Japanese culture, this is it!

I have a number of travel guides and books on Japan, I have several language books as well. I've gotten interested in Japanese culture through manga and anime, which while it may be fiction, it often tells things about a culture I find fascinating. Most of the travel books are more from a tourists perspective on what to see, where to eat, with a few cultural references thrown in on the given areas visited. This book is more of a culture book which explains or at least tries to demystify the what and who is Japan and Japanese. From the origins of some of the more quirky customs to the influence of past history and the modernization of Japan.

Along the way you learn a few words and terms and what they stand for. Some interesting cultural behaviors like Honne and Tatemae, which don't translate very well in Western terms but in general explain a lot about the people. of Japan. Other cultural topics explored include Bushido, the Real Geisha, Martial Arts, Zen, and the use of the Swastika called the Manji symbol in Japan. It explained the use of wearing masks, which I though was just not to spread germs, but is mainly used as a filter for all the pollen released in cherry blossom season. Food and other pastimes are explained as well, each in a nice concise little story fashion conducive to easy reading.

They also explore the culture I like the manga, and the anime, and the craziness of it all. The festivals, the shrines and what the different beliefs represent. It does this all is such a way, it's like reading a good book you can't put down. The book does a nice job of weaving its tales through a historical perspective of Japanese history and without being boring doing so. Highly recommended for anyone looking to learn more about Japan or just someone who likes other cultures. Be forewarned if you know nothing about Japan and you read this book, you can be their will likely be a trip to Japan in your future.

Realism vs Idealism

Does America Need a Foreign Policy? by Henry Kissinger was published in 2001, shortly before 9/11. In the current paperback edition, he has added an Afterword on 9/11 and terrorism. While the Afterword is helpful, what is remarkable is how relevant his pre-9/11 text remains in the post-9/11 world.

Kissinger's title question is purely rhetorical. Of course America needs a foreign policy. His point in the title appears to be that American foreign policy has too often been the subject of domestic political campaigns which are focused more on electing the next president than on the country's real, long-term interests. This is a theme that he shares with the late George Kennan.

Kissinger's text follows a straightforward outline: Suggestions for US foreign policy with regard to Europe, the Western Hemisphere, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, Globalization, and "Peace and Justice". I'll say more on this topic below.

Throughout the text, Kissinger advocates his standard theme of realism versus idealism, as he did in his magnificent prior work, Diplomacy. As a brief example, he points out that a seemingly desirable goal such as the peaceful reunification of Korea may not be as desirable as it might seem at first glance. A unified Korea, he points out, would become a major economic, political, and military power in East Asia. A more robust Korea might be seen as a threat by Japan, thereby destabilizing the current US-Japanese-South Korean alignment. Seeing a unified Korea as a threat, Japan might be tempted to go nuclear and withdraw from its close ties with the US. Do we really want this?

The theme of realism versus idealism becomes particularly pronounced in the chapter on "Peace and Justice". Kissinger's point here is that the basis for diplomacy established by the Peace of Westphalia (1648) was that the governments of the European powers agreed to:

* Deal with other governments as the sole, legitimate diplomatic representatives of their countries, regardless of the level of cordiality or hostility between them

* Refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of other nation-states, specifically religious affiliations, which were the basis for the preceding Thirty Years War which had devastated Europe

These precepts held sway until WWI when the US President, Woodrow Wilson, injected a strong theme of idealism when the US entered the war. His goals were (1) self determination of nationalities, regardless of prior national boundaries, (2) "making the world safe for democracy", and (3) collective security. These goals flew in the face of the Westphalian accords by postulating the existence of a higher (but undefined) diplomatic/legal/moral authority that took precedence over peaceful relations between established governments.

This issue is of particular importance today as it underlies many aspects of US foreign policy. Without offering answers, I'll pose the following dilemmas which Kissinger's book brings to mind:

* There appears to be an inherent conflict between the goals of maintaining peace among nations (diplomacy based on realism, the Westphalian accord) and supporting idealistic goals generally accepted by Americas, including democracy and human rights in other nations (diplomacy based on idealism, the Wilsonian approach). Can we achieve both peace and our idealistic goals? If not, how do we prioritize between them?

* Legal structures in the West, especially Anglo-American legal structures, are based on the mutual acceptance by all parties (or at least most parties) of the existing legal system as a means of settling differences within nations. The concept of "international law" among nations is not so well defined and certainly lacks the level of universal acceptance required to make it effective.

There are tough questions. I thank Kissinger (and Kennan) for helping articulate them. Solving them will be up to their successors.

One view on how US Foreign Policy should be

This book is a treatise from America's top expert on diplomacy Henry Kissinger about the United States foreign policy in a post-Cold War world. It is unfortunate that the book was written before 9/11 and the start of the war on terrorism, save for a brief afterward that is mostly in line with Kissinger's pre 9/11 views.

The book is entertaining and put in a very organized sequence. It highlights the cross Atlantic world leading American-European alliance and offers fresh perspective on how these relations should develop as the European Union gains shape and witnesses a surge in its economic, demographic and geographic might.

Kissinger also talks about other regions in the world including the Middle East and Africa. The book has a much needed historical background about all of the events that it discusses making it easier for readers who are not familiar with overseas issues to get a grasp of what the author is talking about. Kissinger then gives his recommendations on how America should handle its world affairs in the coming century.

He debates the United States role in a growingly globalized world and offers suggestions on how America should deal with global organizations such as the World Trade Organization and the World Bank.

Kissinger sounds more often than not a traditionalist in his foreign policy perspective in that he doesn't view fighting terrorism as the world's top priority. He rather maintains a tone of what America should do to maintain its "assets" and "strategic interests" around the world and how this would define America's role making or breaking of world affairs.

The book also lacks accurate research and is kind of a blown up opinion. For example, Kissinger mentions a ruling Sunni majority in Iraq and an opposing two minority blocs, the Shiites and Kurds. It is a known fact, however, that the Shiites are the Iraqi majority.

A Diplomatic World Tour

Dr. Kissinger dissects the world into their geopolitical grouping, and discusses where current trends are taking each group. The book may be a little outdated since 911 and world terrorism was pushed to front stage, but generally the geopolitical groups remain. A united Europe dealing with a Russia once again as a rising power, the Middle East and the consequences of China becoming a mature power. As a reader that was of draft age during the Vietnam war it was ironic to read that Dr.Kissinger believes that the USA should not be a major player in the far East, but a better plan would be to play the power broker for the rivaling countries referencing Britain's role in regard to the powers on the European continent during the era of Napoleon.

This book is an easy read, very understandable. I read this book because the USA is always criticized for having no foreign policy every time World events hit us broadside.
