This hefty historical fantasy opens a trilogy dealing with the Trojan War but without the usual number of variations on the theme readers have come to expect from prolific and popular fantasist Gemmell. The title character is Aeneas, not outwardly the Trojan hero, however, but a Trojan ally using the name Helikaon. He and the Greek Odysseus are on terms of mutual respect, and he is also in love with Andromache, the betrothed of Hector, Troy's greatest warrior. When relations between Troy and Mycenae start deteriorating dramatically, Helikaon/Aeneas is in several kinds of dilemma. We soon learn that Gemmell's isn't the Homeric scenario of the Iliad, however, because this book's Hector doesn't survive the battles of this preliminary book, and those occur before Agamemnon sets sail for Troy. Gemmell is a master of fast pacing and original, not to say offbeat, takes on legendary and mythical characters. The alternate Iliad he launches here does honor to his reputation and promises to lift it higher while adding notably to readers' pleasure. Roland Green

Astounding!

This book was released in England on the 1st of September and since I couldn't wait until it was released here in the U.S., I ordered.

I was not dissappointed and neither will you be.

David Gemmell fans know that this British author is most famous for writing in the fantasy genre. He is a master of creating a world and then peopling it with characters that are more human than any writer I have encountered. Though "Lord of the Silver Bow" is the first part in a trilogy about the Trojan War, Gemmell still writes like it were his own world. In fact, if the reader didn't know better, he would think that David Gemmell had been in ancient Greece scribing the events as they happened.

Historically, Lord of the Silver Bow is probably not accurate as it is peopled with real historical figures as well as figures from Gemmell's fertile imagination. Whatever historical "truths" that Gemmell misses are more than made up for by his deep insight into the minds of his characters. As in all of his novels the characters contain within them the whole range of human strengths and weaknesses; David Gemmell seems to suggest that a strength and weakness can be one and the same thing.

The story follows Helikaeon a sailor, warrior (and possible King) as he deals with love, death, loss and gain. Odyseuss is a homely, story telling, king that adds wisdom and humor to a world that for the most part is pretty grim.

"Lord of the Silver Bow" is a wonderful beginning to what could quite possibly be the greatest work of an already brilliant writer.

I for one can hardly wait for the rest of the trilogy to unfold.

When Tony Stewart contacted me to review his book The Trash Bag Murderer I was intrigued. Not only had I never heard of the "Trash Bag Killer" Patrick Kearney but there was also the added intrigue that the author was a survivor of this serial killer.What I liked about this book is the personal element of Stewart's knowledge of Kearney and also the extensive research that the author has put into the story. There's also the extra-fascinating chapter where Stewart ponders whether Kearney could be the infamous Zodiac Killer who has never been found.Definitely worth a read. The First Impression was the Correct Impression

This book is horrendous. Writers everywhere should be offended that such a book made it to print. But, looking at the author, Tony Stewart (not to be confused with the NASCAR driver) and the publisher, Tony Stewart Publication, we can see how this book came into being for public consumption.

I initially saw the cover of the book online and thought, "Boy that looks like an amateur job." But, I wanted to adhere to the age old adage of "don't judge a book by its cover", so I paid the $22 for the book. Now, it goes without saying that the book wasn't worth the $22... it wasn't even worth 22 cents. Consider that you can purchase "Helter Skelter", "The Only Living Witness" and other true crime books about other better known serial killers for a fraction of the cost; it makes me that much more bitter about buying this drivel. But alas, I bought this book because I saw no other book that dealt with Patrick Kearney. "The Angel of Darkness", a book about Randy Kraft, does dedicate about 15 pages to the atrocities committed by Kearney, but I wanted more.

When I finally received the book I was even more perturbed by its aesthetics than I was when I saw a picture of it online. Not only does the cover look like a bad Photoshop job but the book is 8 1/2" x 11", like he printed the book at home and ran off copies at Kinko's. The size and the print of the book is like a college syllabus. Then, he uses equally poor cut and paste pictures throughout the book as illustrations. These additional pictures added nothing to the content and they were terribly done. Basically, the book looked like a novice wrote it and nothing inside dispelled that notion. OK, so never mind what the book looks like, that has no bearing on the content.

What became apparent rather quickly is that Tony Stewart A.) is not a writer, B.) has probably never read a true crime novel, and C.) does not know how to use spell check. The factual, grammatical, and spelling errors in this book could fill a book in and of themselves. I'm not a picky reader and I was willing to give Tony Stewart a lot of leeway considering that he was a "survivor" of Patrick Kearney's killing spree. Well, the errors became so many and so obvious that I began making a game of it. I would count how many pages I could complete before I stumbled across the next typo. The typos averaged one a page for a 200 page book.

But, besides the severe grammatical errors such as "trash bends", or "vise-president", or "raine of terror"; the book was just poorly written. The better true crime writers (as Tony proclaims himself to be) give extensive interviews to dozens of different people associated with the crimes so as to give a complete picture of the murderer, the murders, and the victims as well as present information that was never gleaned by the media. It seemed like Tony Stewart did a few cursory interviews with some officers of the law and relied upon public records, newspaper articles and his own recount of his run-in with Kearney for the rest.

Added to the haphazard fashion of the book, Tony poses more questions than he answers. At one point Tony Stewart asks why the Riverside Police won't reopen an investigation of David Hill (Kearney's roommate) seeing as he has some new evidence that points to David Hill's involvement in some of the murders. Well, the answer was fairly obvious: the evidence was circumstantial at best and you're presenting the evidence over 30 years later!! So, no, the police department isn't going to waste resources trying to put together a tenuous case against David Hill.

The book is just a joke and my criticisms are a mile long. My sincere suggestion to anyone looking to buy this book: DON'T! I don't believe I've ever given a one rating for any book. The lowest rating I've ever given before was a two because I had to respect the effort the author put into the book even if I found it sub par. But this book is laughable. It's filled with speculation, poor grammar, childish logic and rampant repetition. If you want to read about Patrick Kearney I suggest purchasing "Angel of Darkness". Although it is about Randy Kraft, there is some good information on Patrick Kearney as well as William Bonin. If you still desire more then there's always Google.

Story that needed to be told

This book is well written and as a friend of a victim I was very happy to see someone bothered to tell the story, however mostly we have the Killers word on some issues and will never know the entire truth. That is not the fault of the author. It is the fault of some law enforcement who did not reveal to families of victims or to the public details that Kearney did not want public. This book says that the police actually took the killer out to dinner. I wonder if that means they brought him dinner because I can only imagine what would happen had a member of the press or a spectator with a camera had captured them out to dinner on film. From reading this book it makes me very sad that these detectives seem to have thought so little of the victims, whom of which many were children. Some refer to them as young men but from a law enforcement standpoint a minor is a child and a 13, 14, 15, 16 or even 17 year old is indeed a minor. On top of that Patrick Kearney snuffed out the life of 8 year old Merle "Hondo" Chance. This kidnap and murder took place after four or five detectives had already been to the Redondo Beach home of Kearney and were investigating the death of John LaMay another minor at 17 years old. Perhaps if someone had kept an eye on Kearney while the police waited for the hair and fiber evidence they took from the home of Hill and Kearney, Hondo would have escaped his terrible fate. Add to that he snuffed out the life of five year old Ronald Dean Smith and according to this book Kearney also claimed to have killed four year old Kevin Dewayne Portis. I also hear Kearney himself is not happy with this book. Seems to me he should be glad it did not go further into what some of the police information seems to indicate. Which is that even though he was into dead bodies and probably not into sadistic torture of his victims, many were found bound and evidence does exist from the coroner that some victims were alive (heart still beating)while Kearney did other vile acts on what he claims were their corpses. Evidence also exists that most of the time when Kearney said he shot a person extra times or did other acts because he claimed they were suffering, other reasons exist for his acts such as victims nearly escaping or Kearney just loosing his temper. Lets face it Kearney was a guy that stood 5'5' and did not look as if he pumped iron. Clearly he had to disable his victims in some manner they did not see comming or??? They may have kicked his ass or killed him in self defense.
Anyway, it is a good book on a case that should be more open and more known about in history. I applaud the author. I also suggest that other crime sites and crime writers that plan to include Kearney in their index read this book and get the facts. It is disturbing that internet sites copy each other and are misleading the public.

Poorly written, homophobic, uninformed.

I got to read a sample of this book. I suggest you do the same. The part I read dealt specifically with the authors run in with the killer. It was kinda repetitive, had multiple spelling errors and by todays standards was a bit on the homophobic side.

"I felt sure he was gay, and I wanted no part of that lifestyle. I don’t have anything personal against gay people, but I never agreed with people being with anyone the same sex. I’ve always felt that it wasn’t right. They can call me prejudice or whatever they like, I don’t care because I don’t have to agree with it."

I got the impression that the book was more opinion than fact. I think this is a fascinating subject. The fact that The Freeway Killer was actually 3 independent killers. I wish their was more available on Patrick Kearney.

Masanao Aoki is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Economics at the University of California, Los Angeles. He also held professorial appointments at the Institute for Social and Economic Research at Osaka University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, and the University of Illinois. Professor Aoki is a past President of the Society for Economic Dynamics and Control, a Fellow of the Econometric Society, and a Fellow of the IEEE Control Systems Society. Currently Associate Editor of the journal Macroeconomic Dynamics published by Cambridge University Press, he also served as Editor of the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control and the International Economic Review, and Associate Editor of the IEEE's Transaction of Automatic Control, Information Sciences, and the Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Application. Professor Aoki is the author or editor of ten books, including New Approaches to Macroeconomic Modeling: Evolutionary Stochastic Dynamics, Multiple Equilibria, and Externalities as Field Effects (Cambridge University Press, 1996).

This brilliantly researched book views human physiology in a completely different light from that hitherto known, and is highly recommended to be read by those belonging to the medical profession, and even the lay person.

In this original research, Professor Tony Nader has sought to discover the true purpose of the form and function of the human physiology, and its relation to cosmology. It is interesting to note that he has studied and compared every aspect of human physiology, at all its stages—the DNA, cell, embryo, up to the adult human physiology, and found that at every level, there is a precise one-to-one correspondence between the structure and functions of human physiology and the 40 aspects of the Veda and the Vedic Literature, which are the fundamental structures of Natural Law, as brought to light by Maharishi in his Vedic Science.

About the Author
Professor Nader received his MD degree from the American University of Beirut, where he also studied internal medicine and psychiatry.

His PhD is in the area of Brain and Cognitive Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he was also a visiting physician at the Clinical Research Center. He completed his post-doctoral work as a Clinical and Research Fellow in Neurology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

Professor Nader has conducted research on neurochemistry, neuroendocrinology, and the relationship between diet, age, behavior, mood, seasonal influences, and neurotransmitter and hormonal activity, and on the role of neurotransmitter precursors in medicine.

His interest in natural health care led him, while at MIT, to conduct research on Maharishi Ayur-Veda herbal and mineral preparations for their safety, their effects on memory and behavior, and their ability to prevent aging and disease, including cancer.

He also conducted original research on the effects of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Program in solving social and international problems.

Professor Nader's desire to gain total understanding of the human mind and body-of consciousness and physiology-led him to the study of Maharishi's Vedic Science and Technology under the guidance of His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

He has organized courses and lectured widely on Maharishi Ayur-Ved, the ancient system of perfect health, in more than 50 countries, and held positions as a professor and director of Maharishi's Vedic Approach to Health Programs.

He is currently International President of Maharishi Open Universities; International President of Maharishi's World Parliament or World Peace; Director of the Council of Supreme Intelligence of Maharishi's Global Administration through Natural Law; International President of Maharishi Ayru-Veda Universities; president of Maharishi University of Management, Holland; and President of Maharishi European University of Management, Brussels.

Professor Nader was honored by Maharishi as Custodian of the Constitution of the Universe in 1997. He was also given the title Chakravarti by Maharishi on the day of Guru Purnima, 1997.

On the basis of his knowledge of physiology, Dr. Nader has successfully correlated each aspect of the Vedic Literature to a specific area of physiology, with the conclusion that human physiology is the expression of Veda and the Vedic Literature. This is the subject matter of this book.

In honor of his discovery, Professor Nader received his weight in gold at a historic celebration in February 1998, at Maharishi Vedic University in Vlodrop, Holland, in the presence of Maharishi.

This discovery has been appreciated by scientists and political leaders throughout the world, including the Presidents of India, Mozambique, Lebanon, Turkey, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and of all the Middle East.

From 12 October to 16 October, 2000, during a five-day coronation ceremony (Rajyabhishek), Professor Tony Nader, was crowned the First Sovereign Ruler of the Global Country of World Peace, with its authority in the invincible organizing power of Natural Law, which naturally and eternally governs the evolution of all life everywhere.

On 17 October, Professor Nader, honoured with the title Nader Raam, in keeping with the tradition of the Royal Rulership of Raam-- the rule of Natural Law--graciously accepted his new sovereign role and announced the forty Ministries of His Global Country of World Peace, each upheld by the total Constitution of the Universe- forty values of the Vedic Literature--and yet also especially highlighted by one of the forty.

amazing book, profound and wonderful

This book is phenomenal. The Veda ('knowledge' in Sanskrit) and Vedic literature is convincingly demonstrated to be the structure of the human physiology, thus making this book relevant to every human being. Very interesting is the correlation with the Unified Field of modern physics (thank you Einstein) mathematically: one becomes three, which becomes eight, becomes 24, then 96, then 192. This is why there are 192 ascending and descending tracts of our central nervous system, for example. This correlation of form and function continues for all 40 aspects of the Vedic literature. It's a new paradigm for medical science.
Also impressive is the correlation with Vedic 'gods' which are shown to actually be the different types of intelligence within our physiology. For instance, Ganesh, the 'elephant god' and remover of obstacles, comprises the pons, medulla and cerebellum. In their function, they exactly represent the same functions ascribed to Ganesh. Together these structures also look exactly like Ganesh. (seen in figures 134-139)
New effective treatments have already been derived and clinically tested from this knowledge, including primordial sound therapy, light therapy, Vedic vibration therapies, etc.
The human physiology (including DNA at its core) has the same structure and function as the holistic, self-sufficient reality expressed in Rk Veda. This renders the study of physiology as the supreme philosophy of life, establishing individual consciousness and national consciousness on the level of Cosmic Life. In honor of his discovery, Dr Nader was awarded his weight in gold at Maharishi Vedic University in Vlodrop, Holland, February 1998.

About the Author
Hana S. El-Gallal is a professor at Benghazi University, Libya, where she teaches International Law and where she is the head of the Cultural Committee in the Faculty of Law. She is Member of the Libyan NationalCouncil of Human Rights and the Founder and President of the Libyan Centre for Development and Human Rights (a NGO). She studied Law in Mohamed Cinq University in Morocco and Ben-ghazi University. She obtained her PhD in Law from Bern University, Switzerland.

Growing up in what he calls the twilight of the Stone Age, Hensley grew up without what many would consider basic necessities; in his homeland on the Kotzebue Sound in rural Alaska, survival was the primary concern. Adult/High School—Hensley grew up in a remote Alaskan village in the early 1940s and eventually became a politician and lobbyist for Native affairs. He tells of living in a sod house with no electricity, running water, bed of his own, or medical or dental care, but of being lovingly cared for by his adoptive parents—and the whole village. His early education, conveyed through oral tradition and imbued with a deep reverence for nature, taught him the hunting and fishing skills needed for survival. In contrast, his education at the Bureau of Indian Affairs school endeavored to Americanize the students and to denigrate their heritage. Hensley later attended a Baptist boarding school in Tennessee where he was encouraged to assimilate into the Southern teen lifestyle of the time, further removing him from his beloved Inupiat heritage. With humor and pathos, the author describes his youthful experiences straddling two cultures. At George Washington University, he became interested in civil rights and advocated for Native causes. The frustrations of his people as they tried to maneuver the domestic, political, and corporate complexities of modern life in the then newly formed state are passionately revealed as Hensley details his membership in the National Congress of American Indians and the Alaskan House of Representatives. compelling, riveting window on the virtually unknown world of Alaska and its indigenous people

Willie Hensley's life story is one of extraordinary range and comprehension, both literally and figuratively.
From a childhood lived above the arctic circle, in the "twilight of the stone age" among his Inupiat extended family, through an abrupt transplantation for schooling in eastern Tennessee and then Washington DC, the
arc of his life is nearly without parallel in modern America. With powerful imagery and elegant, flowing prose, Willie conveys the essence of life as an Alaska Native in the 20th century as no one has done before. He paints vivid
pictures of the magnificent land of northwestern Alaska, the incomparable wisdom, dignity, grace and
humor of his Inupiat (Inuit) culture---and then the equally harsh challenges facing his people since Alaska
became America: forced assimilation by missionaries and teachers who were both "church and state" in one;and the challenge of sustaining life and culture in harmony with the land and sea and natural resources while also surviving in a
"modern" world driven by a cash economy. Willie's life's work -- of seeing that Alaska's Native
people retain ownership of ancestral lands while they fight to hold onto a fraying sense of cultural identity
and still prosper --is really a tale of universal human challenges. That
is what makes this such an important book, for the lessons we can all learn about adaptability and continuity

A memoir well worth reading

Hensley grew up in the wilds of Alaska in the mid twentieth century, learning the traditional ways and culture of his people. But then he was pulled from this and sent to a high school in the South. Not only did he adapt but he learned what he had to do to make the Natives' inevitable transition to "modern" living smoother and he became a guide and leader in the movement. He provides a stark look at what it took to survive and how even statehood did not begin to solve the Natives' problems.

An incredible story

Here is a really excellent book about the recent history of Alaska and unique life. Its about the right person in the right place at the right time with the right idea having the courage to take the right actions.

Willie shares personal details of a very different and impactful life from the relatively humdrum of the rest of us. On a personal level it's a very private sharing of a full and challenging life from a sod hut on the shores of the Bering Strait to the proverbial halls of power in Washington DC. On a political level it tells some of the details of how Alaska came to have a very different, respectful, and sharing relationship between native people and culture and that of the recently-arrived western civilization. On an even broader level it gives us a glimpse of the processes and realities of bringing together widely differing needs and approaches to knowing, loving, sharing, and exploiting the land.

Willies story gives non-natives and even natives, an opportunity to understand how others may look at Alaska.

Willie shares with us a deep well of personal courage, commitment to family and culture, and dedication to see things through to the end envisioned, and in the process reminds us all that if you want to get it done, you just have to go out and do it.
