I already knew that storytelling is an extremely powerful method for making connections, but had no idea that combined with NLP you had a perfect connection to really make a huge difference. The book covers the role of memory and mind maps and also how to use anchoring with storytelling.

This is a joke. I have the hard cover and thought this was the whole book. You get 2 chapters for 2 bucks. I can't believe that Amazon allows this. They figure most people won't return for a refund. The best part of the book is missing.

Good News - God is still in control

Almighty God is still in control of everything. He knows how to take good things and make them better but more importantly He know how to take the hurts, aches, and pains of this life and turn them into His perfect plan for our lives. Sometimes we don't see it, but He's there. At each turn, each intersection of our lives He's there. We just need to be reassured that He has our best interest at heart. How do we know? He sent His only son, Jesus, to show us just how much He loves us. A great reminder to those who don't and those that do place their faith in the one true God.

Like Pandora's Box of mythology, what the Pandorica itself holds, in Doctor Who, is perhaps not what one might expect, and can be used in a way that one also might not expect.

Viewers and fans of Doctor Who may have their own opinions about the new Doctor, about the direction of the series under Mr. Steven Moffat, writer and now producer of the show. That is as it should be. Mr. Collins, a self-acknowledged fan, demonstrates his knowledge of the episodes, both current and "classic", and his ability to weave together both in context, with connections between classic and current in scenes, bits of dialogue, and character. Mr. Collins also aptly and ably provides an understanding of the symbolism and significance of the current characters, based on the analyses of fairy-tale, mythology, fantasy literature, and just perhaps a good dose of common sense observation of how people interact (in this sense, even the Doctor is considered "people"!)

This reader does not always relish reading reviews of episodes by other individuals. Enjoyment of a book or tv show is often a very personal matter, and not every fan will agree on every point. I am also not at all knowledgeable about how fairy-tale and fantasy speak to the human psyche. I generally just enjoy watching Doctor Who because--well--I find the Doctor's character (in any regeneration, but admittedly especially now) engaging, charming, whimsical, boyish--and a few other adjectives. After reading Doctor Who: The Pandorica Opens, I have somewhat more of an appreciation for the creative process behind the character, for the dynamic of the show, for the vision of the storyteller, and the talent of the actor. I do marvel that with many of his points, it felt like he had been in my own head, as we agreed on many. Even where we disagreed, and yes there were a few--I have my own opinion of the character of River Song and her place in the story frame, for example--I do really appreciate the new insights from various areas of psychology and myth-study.

I hope that Mr. Collins plans more analyses of some kind for the show.

Although the reader might not always find themselves agreeing with all of the author's findings - I guarantee that even during those rare instances of disagreement, they will still find themselves appreciative of the intelligence with which they find their views challenged.

Make no mistake; I'm convinced that this is an important book in the field of not just Doctor Who, but also of media criticism as a whole. Frank Collins is not only to be applauded for presenting us with a volume worthy of the quality of the series it addresses - but also for throwing wide the door allowing us a different way of looking at it.

To say that I await the author's next work with keen anticipation would be an understatement.

About the Author

Paul A. W. Wallace (d. 1967) was a noted anthropologist and historian who served on the staff of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission from 1957 to 1965. He was the author of numerous volumes on the history of the Indians in Pennsylvania during the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s.

Thorough and accessible historical and cultural overview

I was really pleased with this book, all the more so since it was published in 1970, when attitudes towards Native Americans weren't as they are today in 2005.

The book is not too long, but thorough and well-documented. It's about right for someone who's really busy and just wants a good and thorough overview.

The book explains well the various tribes (including the Delaware, Iriquois, Eries, Susquehannocks, Shawnee, Conoy, Conestoga, Mohawk, Oneida, Tuscarora, and Wyandots), although it's focus is particularly on the Delaware and Iriquois, who were descendant and ascendant at the time. Wallace does a particularly good job explaining the impact of white settlers on the native tribes, particularly in terms of the impact on native economics, which drove local tribes to immediately abandon traditional weapons for guns, which they could only get from the settlers. In order to get guns, the only item the settlers wanted were furs, which were in demand in Europe, particularly beaver. Immediately the local animal populations were devastated, and in order to get more, the Native tribes had to go further and further west. All the tribes realized that their fates were precarious, as they dealt with the English in the East and the French to the North, and the Indian tribes weren't innocent, they worked politics and alliances as well as the English... although perhaps not as well as the French. The Iriquois in particular had a clear vision of what they had to do to survive, and jockeyed to become the middle-men between the other Indian tribes and the settlers.

There's much more than this, including primary source accounts from the 17th and 18th Century, well-balanced descriptions of culture, technology, religion, and ceremonies, maps and illustrations, and the final migration of the Indians out of Pennsylvania, based on a series of land purchases and the "extinguishment of Indian title." And of course much history about the wars and conflicts between tribes and the settlers.

History has been revised (as it has been before and will be before), and this book may have an older point of view that may not be what is conventional wisdom today regarding relations between the settlers and natives. But in some ways this point of view is new to me, and is worth considering. Rather than being entirely stolen, land in pennsylvania was purchased in fairly above-board manners that surprised me. When taken in context of how land had been won and lost between the tribes for centuries before, and how there was a vast uninhabited area in Western Pennsylvania due to the disappearnce of the Monongahelia tribe (due to plague or conquest is unknown), it puts things in a new perspective. That doesn't lessen by any means other tragic events (such as the forced relocation through the Trail of Tears, etc.) and what conventional wisdom says are hundreds of other broken treaties, but it is a different perspective.

I'd recommend this book for people with an interest in local history, and students in high school and perhaps junior high school.

An insightful look at the REAL history of Native Americans.

Paul A. W. Wallace offers us an unbiased account of the history of
the Native American people of Pennsylvania. Each chapter made
me want to learn more about the individual tribe that was
represented in its pages and inspired me to continue reading.

Mr. Wallace does not ever compare the European settlers with
the Indians and say that one was more savage than the other.
He merely points out that the Native American people were
more intelligent than what the history books would have us
believe. Paul Wallace introduces us to an innocent culture
and guides us through the necessary metamorphosis of a land
besieged by "conquerors."

If you're interested in the plight of Native Americans, or
in the history of Pennsylvania, this book should become the
keystone of your library!

The real truth in history

"Indians in Pennsylvania" provides a very concise overview of Native American cultures and covers the interaction of the European immigration. This is one of the best presentations of interaction of the "White Man" and the Native North Americans that I have read.

What makes this book different (and better) than other social psychology texts is the way it is organized around a set of fundamental principles of motivation and cognition. Rather than simply listing and describing the standard topics, the principles provide a framework for integrating them into a consistent and coherent understanding of all social psychology and behavior. About the Author

Eliot Smith is Chancellor’s Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University, Bloomington. His research interests range widely, including person perception, prejudice and intergroup relations, political and social opinions, and situated and embodied cognition. He has published more than 150 scientific articles and chapters on these and other topics, and his work has been supported by research grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Science Foundation. Professor Smith earned his B.A. and Ph.D. at Harvard University, and before moving to Bloomington held positions at the University of California, Riverside and at Purdue University. Besides this textbook, he has authored Beliefs about Inequality (with James Kluegel) as well as editing Beyond Prejudice: Differentiated Reactions to Social Groups (with Diane Mackie). Among his professional honors are the Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations award in 1998, the Thomas M. Ostrom Award for contributions to social cognition in 2004, the Society of Social and Personality Psychology’s Theoretical Innovation Prize in 2005, and the International Social Cognition Network’s award for the best paper in 2009. He has been chair of a grant review committee at the National Institute of Mental Health, Editor of Personality and Social Psychology Review, and is currently Editor of Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: Attitudes and Social Cognition. These positions have given him tremendous appreciation for the best work in every area of social psychology. Professor Smith is married to Pamela Grenfell Smith, a poet and storyteller. Diane Mackie is Professor and Chair of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she has been honored with a Distinguished Teaching Award and listed as one of "Ten Terrific Teachers" by UCSB students. Professor Mackie grew up in New Zealand, received her B.A. and M.A. at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and then worked as a researcher at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. She received her Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Princeton University in 1984. These opportunities to become steeped in both European and North American traditions of social psychology are reflected in her interests in integrating different perspectives and approaches both in her research and in this textbook. The author of more than 100 articles, chapters, and books on persuasion, social influence, group interaction, and intergroup relations, Professor Mackie is also co-editor of Affect, Cognition, and Stereotyping: Interactive Processes in Group Perception (with David Hamilton) as well as Beyond Prejudice: Differentiated Reactions to Social Groups (with Eliot Smith). Reflecting her broad interests, Professor Mackie has served as Associate Editor for Personality and Social Psychology Review, Group Processes and Intergroup Relations, and Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, as well as on the editorial boards of almost all major social psychological journals. Both the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health have funded her research. Professor Mackie counts among her honors fellow status in the Association for Psychological Science, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues. However by far her greatest (and busiest) honor is being Mom to college freshman Alex and high school freshman Nico, the two coolest kids on the planet.

Heather Claypool is Professor of Psychology at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Her research interests focus on how motivation, emotion, and mood influence and are influenced by cognitive processes. Specific topics of study have examined how processing ease (or fluency) shapes social perceptions and behaviors; how feelings of positivity trigger feelings of familiarity; and how feelings of belongingness and a lack of belongingness shape emotions, self-esteem, social perceptions, and social information processing. She has published more than 30 scientific articles and chapters on these and other topics, and her work has been supported by research grants from the National Science Foundation. Professor Claypool earned her Ph.D. at Purdue University in 2002 (where Eliot Smith served as one of her mentors), and then worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara (with Diane Mackie). In 2003, she took a position at Miami University in Oxford, OH, where she continues on the faculty today. She has been an Associate Editor for Basic and Applied Social Psychology, is currently an Associate Editor at Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, and serves on the editorial boards of several other journals. She has also served as a panelist for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program. Professor Claypool is married to Eric Core, an engineer, and they share a love for travel, tennis, good food, and their two adorable cats, Abby and Murphy.
