Humans are not from Earth: a scientific evaluation of the evidence, by Ellis Silver

An evaluation of the evidence for and (mostly) against man’s evolution on Planet Earth, by a leading environmentalist and ecologist.

Including:

An evaluation of the thirteen leading hypotheses

Seventeen factors which suggest we are not from Earth

How did we get here?

When did we get here?

What is our home planet like?

The most likely stars that our home planet orbits

If the aliens are out there why can’t we detect them?

Are we the aliens?

In this fascinating book Dr. Ellis Silver provides answers to all of these questions, based on current evidence and thinking in the scientific community and elsewhere. Links to websites that discuss the evidence and debate the issues in more detail are also provided.

This short book is intended to raise awareness and stimulate debate and to request/gather further evidence from readers.

Do NOT waste your time or money on this book
By H. H. Craft
I'll be honest and say that I lean away from so-called ancient astronaut theory (AAT)--the hypothesis that humans originated elsewhere than Earth. However, there are enough anomalies and peculiarities regarding human origins that I'm not sure, and I keep an open mind. I think a sound or at least plausible argument for the POSSIBILITY of AAT can be made. This book had got a lot of notices (some in relatively mainstream venues), so I thought, given its low price, that it was worth a look. Well, as I said, it may be possible to make an argument in favor of AAT, but THIS book sure didn't make it.

There's no nice way to say it--Silver's book is the stupidest piece of goofball tripe I've read in years, bar none. Not only does he show no evidence of understanding what he talks about; not only does he begin the book by assuming what he wants to "prove"; not only is his bibliography mostly irrelevant to his thesis (e.g. he cites "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins. How is that relevant?); but he can't even go a chapter without either contradicting HIMSELF or making an absolutely ridiculous statement that, as the old saying goes, isn't even WRONG.

Some examples: After (rightly) observing the high amount of genes we share with chimps and even lower animals, he immediately says that maybe we evolved elsewhere and were broight here as is and those similarities are a COMPLETE AND TOTAL COINCIDENCE, because, well, maybe DNA is the same everywhere! (I'm not kidding)

In one chapter he changes his mind from PARAGRAPH TO PARAGRAPH as to whether we are the actual descendents of the aliens who brought us here; or hybrids of these aliens with terrestrial hominids; or inhabitants of a THIRD planet who were brought here by OTHER aliens. In another, he argues that our planet of origin must have been very resource-poor and that its inhabitants must have struggled to feed themselves, and get this--he says they must have had a cloudy atmosphere that would have made it impossible to see the stars; BUT these aliens may have developed the technology to come here--a planet of a star they could never have detected!

Finally, one of the stupidest things: He says that the increasing height of humans indicates that we must have come from a higher-gravity planet and results from our being in Earth's lower gravity. Never mind that all of these increases in height have occurred in the last TWO HUNDRED YEARS OR LESS out of all the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF YEARS the species has existed!!!

Supposedly this guy is an "environmentalist", but he doesn't seem to me to have the least understanding of LOGIC, let alone science. What's really odd in that regard is that after a bit of Googling, I can't even find anything about an "Ellis Sliver" EXCEPT in the articles about this book, or articles referring to this book. I see him referred to as "Dr." Ellis Silver; but given that, according to the bio in the book he not only is a professional ecologist, but has founded an environmental company in England, it's really odd that I can't seem to find ANYTHING about him (even a cursory search ought to turn up SOMETHING) not related to this book. Very strange.

In any case, there is not a shred of logic, science, empricism, or plausibility in this book. It is SO bad that I'm almost inclined to think it's a hoax, that somehow he got Yahoo! and a few other sites to mention his book, with the result that normally skeptical people (like me) would buy the book. That may not be the case, and since I don't know anything about the author, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt as to character and sincerity. Nevertheless, I would definitely say to everyone who comes here thinking about buying the book: DON'T waste your time or your money.

not good
By Manuel
I thought this was going to be a serious scientific book. I believe it's possible that we came from another planet. I don't know what this person got a phD in but most high schoolers could argue away his claims. He doesn't provide any evidence for any of this theories. The author really should take a couple anthropology classes at a community college.

'The things we like to eat: chocolate, sugar, red meat, saturated fat, alcoholic drinks, are all the things that are bad for us....either evolution has screwed up big time or we can't possibly be from this planet.'

How do you argue with that?

Species III fan-fiction with what a fifth-grader thinks a "scientist" sounds like as narrator.
By D. Bost
A short list of ways in which the author fails at science at the most basic level possible, just within the free-sample portion of the book:

Title/rights page: Author does not list his current institution of employment, or the institution funding him at the time his research was done (because he doesn't actually have a PhD and didn't actually do any research, most likely)

Introduction:
Formatted as a high school essay introduction, not a scientific work intro
Merely asserts conclusion repeatedly, does not reference actual later 'evidence'/conclusions -- so a high-school FAILED essay introduction format, then.

Sec. 1 (How did we get here):
References "my friend, Dave Haslett"-- again, no actual position or reference given (should be footnoted at minimum)
Fails biology forever: asserts that we are an introduced species (we share 50% of our DNA with bananas and 99.9% with other great apes, everything else is somewhere between-- hypotheses that do not account for this automatically fail)

Sec. 2 (If there are aliens, why can't we detect them?)
Fails signal engineering forever: asserts that earth is "going dark" because "all broadcasts will be low-power wireless or cable" (easy counterexample 1: most of our signals are routed through satellites at one point or another. easy counter-example 2: we're in regular communication with devices on other planets and beyond the orbit of Pluto, and will continue to be for the forseeable future).
Fails basic physics forever: "infra red, (visible) light, microwaves" are the same kind of radiation as radio, and spread into space in the same fashion.
Fails logic forever: claims that we know aliens put us here, because we know they must be out there, because we know they put us here... this entire circular bit of logic fits in a single paragraph.

Sec. 3 (Seventeen factors which suggest we aren't from Earth)
Sub 1: The sun hurts our eyes
Fails biology forever: implies non-human animals have no problems when looking directly at the sun (blatantly false)
Double down on the failure: claims animals that freeze in bright lights (headlights) aren't blinded by those lights. In actuality, that is why they freeze in the first place.
Fails human-watching forever: claims humans deal with bright lights much worse than other mammals. A lot of roadkill would like to have a word with him about that.
Fails biology forever: posits that evolution is an organized force with a "goal" of making things "better".

Sub 2 (the sun kills us)
Fails husbandry forever: claims non-human mammals do not suffer sun-burn, skin cancer, or cataracts from sun exposure. Should have talked to a veterinarian about that one, bud. Or literally anyone that's ever owned a dog-- these are all major health concerns for (mammal) pets as they age.

Overall:
Fails at basic rigor: in science, asking "so why/why not?" and then asserting "because (my conclusion)" is not how it works, there are those intermediate steps in there where you put in evidence and so on.

Conclusion: Ellis Silver does not actually have a PhD, is a conspiracy theorist who has seen Species III one too many times, and most importantly is wasting your time. Don't let him waste your time, or money. Don't buy this book.

Death of the Iron Horse, by Paul Goble

The Iron Horse was coming....Thundering and panting and breathing black smoke, it was a fearsome thing. The Cheyenne people had never seen a steam locomotive before, and it terrified them. Would it come right over the hill, into their camp, just as the relentless soldiers and white settlers had done before?

Powerful words and pictures tell the true story of August 7, 1867 - the only time an "Iron Horse" was derailed by Native Americans. It is a tale of courage and pride and of a people caught up in an unequal struggle to preserve their sacred way of life.

not for novices
By Karl F. Newman
I recently borrowed this book from the library and I think it is a definite "must have" for my bookshelf!
Mr. Brown's outlines of his methods of work are well thought out and described. His anecdotes as to how he got to where he is are interesting and well written.
However if you don't already have a book like John Kassay's "The Book of American Windsor Furniture" (which has measurements and angles and sizes and shapes but very little of the "how to"), it will be daunting to try to make a chair after reading "Welsh Stick Chairs".
Mr Brown does give a few general dimensions but none of the angles nor a map of the seat of any kind (though he mentions that he uses them). I do understand that Mr Brown's own education in chairmaking was a journey in discovering for himself the sizes, shapes and angles that work, but he also had some examples directly to hand to try to copy. Which is something most of us do not have. Thus, at least one full set of dimensions would have been nice to get us all started on that same journey.
An excellent read, written by a clever man.

Good old book!
By Kindle Customer
I enjoyed this look back in the construction on chairs and will be doing some of this myself in the future. Recommended for anyone exploring how things were done in the past and why we should go back to some of the old ways.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, July 2008: Armed with the same engaging narrative found in Clemente and When Pride Still Mattered, Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Maraniss chronicles the triumphs, tragedies, and treacheries of "the Olympics that changed the world" with Rome 1960. The same Games that announced the greatness of icons like Cassius Clay, Wilma Rudolph, and Rafer Johnson, also exposed a growing unrest between East and West, black and white, and male and female. Even the host city of Rome, Maraniss recounts, was "infused with a golden hue...an illuminating that comes with a moment of historical transition, when one era is dying and another is being born." With moving portraits of the Games's remarkable personalities woven among tales of espionage and propaganda, Rome 1960 explores an Olympics unable to fight off the troubles of the modern world. Cold War sniping and issues of social inequalities were spilling into fields and stadiums, and the face of sport was rapidly changing. History buffs and sports fans alike will appreciate Maraniss’s quiet reporting, as he deftly removes himself from a storyline that is still relevant today. --Dave Callanan

From Publishers Weekly
Overshadowed by more flamboyant or tragic Olympics, the 1960 Rome games were a sociopolitical watershed, argues journalist Maraniss (Clemente) in this colorful retrospective. The games showcased Cold War propaganda ploys as the Soviet Union surged past the U.S. in the medal tally. Steroids and amphetamines started seeping into Olympian bloodstreams. The code of genteel amateurism—one weight-lifter was forbidden to accept free cuts from a meat company—began crumbling in the face of lavish Communist athletic subsidies and under-the-table shoe endorsement deals. And civil rights and anticolonialism became conspicuous themes as charismatic black athletes—supercharged sprinter Wilma Rudolph, brash boxing phenom Cassius Clay, barefoot Ethiopian marathoner Abebe Bikila—grabbed the limelight while the IOC sidestepped the apartheid issue. Still, we're talking about the Olympics, and Maraniss can't help wallowing in the classic tropes: personal rivalries, judging squabbles, come-from-behind victories and inspirational backstories of obstacles overcome (Rudolph wins the gold, having hurdled Jim Crow and childhood polio that left her in leg braces). As usual, these Olympic stories don't quite bear up under the mythic symbolism they're weighted with (with the exception perhaps of Abebe Bikila), but Maraniss provides an intelligent context for his evocative reportage. From Bookmarks Magazine
David Maraniss has demonstrated great range throughout his writing career. His latest effort is a timely and, for the most part, a well executed look at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Although the book’s subtitle may be a bit of a reach, Maraniss has much to say about the implications of the Rome Games as a microcosm of the political, financial, and humanitarian forces shaping the world at the time. Only the New York Times Book Review opined that the event’s obscurity today suggests that nothing was, in fact, world-changing about it. Rome 1960 combines the author’s passion for sports with his keen eye for sociopolitical connections to offer a compelling portrait of the “Olympics that changed the world.”

For the Ages
By CC Coach Mike
Mr. Maraniss takes us back to the Rome Olympics in 1960. With loving detail he recreates that watershed moment when the Cold War first seriously collided with the sporting world. He reintroduces us to the sporting heroes of a bygone era. Greats like Wilma Rudolph, Ralph Bunch, Abebe Bikila and Rafer Johnson are recognized for their place in history. We meet the young Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali)in all his brash insecurity. This is the moment when drugs first creeps onto the Olympic stage and when amateurism is being questioned. This a fascinating read.

Terrific Reading about the World at a Crossroads - and Glimpses of Sports Superstars, too!
By David Crumm
The world is changing so fast right now that most of us can barely keep up with the daily news that affects our lives, jobs and future. So, it's a rare and wonderful treat when a book comes along that carries us back to a time and place when the world changed more slowly - to show us one of those events that truly did change our global culture. When such books come along, they're usually about wars - but not this new gem by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David Maraniss.

Given my own background as a journalist, I'll confess that I was puzzled by Maraniss' decision in selecting "Rome 1960" for a thick new book of nearly 500 pages (that's counting all the extras at the end). As I picked up the book, I kept asking myself: Why did he call this particular meet -- "The Olympics that Changed the World"?

As a specialist in religion and culture, I've immersed myself in histories of other Olympics: the 1924 "Chariots of Fire" Olympics, the 1936 Nazi-dominated Olympics, the 1972 Olympics when terrorists killed 11 Israeli athletes - and even the 1964 Tokyo Olympics that were a milestone in global culture in part because of Kon Ichikawa's historic documentary film.

But having read Maraniss' new book, I've got to agree - Rome in 1960 ranks right up there as a milestone in world culture.

I had not considered the roles of the major players who all collided in Rome that year - including the now-infamous anti-Semite and pro-Nazi American czar of the Olympics movement: Avery Brundage. If you don't find yourself drawn to "Sports" - but you are fascinated by 20th-Century history, especially the 1930s, Fascism and the Holocaust - this is a "must read" book for you. Think of it as a "sequel" to books about the controversial Nazi Olympics in which Hitler, Goebbels and Riefenstahl essentially pulled a fast one on Brundage in convincing him to help them celebrate their glorious new Reich.

As a journalist, I'm a longtime follower of new research into that earlier era - and Maraniss picks up the Brundage story in 1960 and pretty much nails the man and his many levels of hypocrisy - and lets us see how this antique figure collided with many of the realities of later-20th-Century culture. Among the key details Maraniss adds to our understanding of Brundage are personal jottings he made during the Rome Olympics that, among other things, complained of the emergence of "Jews ... demanding restitution for everything lost and lot more." (Of course, Brundage somehow managed to continue at the helm through 1972 in Munich, where controversy continued to surround his decisions.)

What's great about this new book is that everything I've said about the Brundage sub-plot is just one of many compelling storylines that Maraniss explores in these 500 pages. Among other things: These were the Olympics in which Cassius Clay exploded onto the global stage, later to transform himself into Muhammad Ali. These were the games of Wilma Rudolph. These were the games in which commercial interests were knocking down old-school barriers that claimed to be preserving an "amateur" tradition. Doping became an issue at Rome. Two Chinas and two Germanys jostled at these games.

This is summer reading at its best. The next Olympic games are looming. The world is no longer merely tilting on its axis. No, global culture now is spinning at a topsy-turvy rate, it seems.

Pick up "Rome 1960." If you're like me, you won't stop until you've read the whole thing - and you'll come away understanding just a little more about how we all got to this place we're standing in this strange new century.

Rome 1960
By William A. Bormann
The writer did a excellent job telling about the background of the atheletes who partipated in the games. The story
of Rufus Johnson and Wilma Randolph were excellent examples. I grew up in the 1960's, some of
the things he wrote about I remember. ihave enjoyed all his books.
