Aphrodite the Beauty

1 Boy Trouble
APHRODITE SLID INTO HER SEAT IN MR. Cyclops’s Hero-ology class just as the lyrebell sounded, signaling the start of another day at Mount Olympus Academy. As she tucked her long golden hair, which was threaded with pink ribbons, behind her delicate ears, she was aware that every godboy in class was watching her. She hoped that in her rush to get ready that morning she hadn’t smeared lipstick on her teeth. Lifting her chin, she smiled at one of the godboys. Because he was a centaur, and therefore part horse, he stood at the back of the room. With four legs, it was too difficult to sit in a chair. Dazzled by Aphrodite’s attention and sparkling blue eyes, he blushed and glanced away.

A few of the bolder godboys continued to gaze at her, however. Their adoration was plain to see. Ignoring them, Aphrodite reached into her bag and took out her Hero-ology textscroll. As the goddessgirl of love and beauty, she’d grown used to such admiration. Took it for granted in fact. All her life, godboys had found her enchantingly beautiful. It seemed they had only to look at her to fall hopelessly in love. That wasn’t her fault, of course. It was just the way things were.

Aphrodite glanced across the aisle at Athena, trying to get her attention. All week, the class discussions had centered around mortal maidens and youths. She wanted to ask if Athena had heard the intriguing rumors about a maiden on Earth who could run as swift as the wind, faster than any youth—or even beast. But as usual, her friend’s nose was buried in a text-scroll. Before Aphrodite could call out to her, Medusa, who sat directly behind Athena, leaned across the aisle.

Her head writhed with hissing green snakes instead of hair. Their tongues flicked in and out as she poked Aphrodite with one of her long green fingernails. “You were almost late,” she sneered. “Troubles, Bubbles?” Medusa and her horrible sisters, Stheno and Euryale, never missed an opportunity to use the awful nickname to make fun of Aphrodite’s sea foam origins.

“Not really,” Aphrodite muttered. She wasn’t about to admit she’d overslept. It would only give Medusa another reason to poke fun at her. Probably with jokes about her needing lots of beauty sleep. Fortunately, before her snaky green nemesis could say anything more, Mr. Cyclops finished with a student he’d been speaking to and stood up. As his humongous single eye swept the room, everyone fell silent.

Aphrodite wondered what they’d be discussing today. Yesterday their teacher had asked how much and what kind of help they thought gods should give to mortals they favored. Aphrodite, who enjoyed helping mortals in love, had hoped to talk about that, but the godboys in class had immediately steered the discussion toward weapons and war—topics that could never hold her interest for long.

Reaching into her bag again, she pulled out her pink papyrus notepad and began to doodle little hearts all over the front with her favorite red feather pen. Mr. Cyclops cleared his throat. “Today I’d like you to consider the following question,” he said. “Need mortal maidens always marry?”

Dropping her red feather pen in surprise, Aphrodite sat up straighter. Now this was an engaging question! She’d like to see the godboys try to make this into a discussion about weapons and war, she thought as she raised her hand high.

“Yes, Aphrodite?” asked Mr. Cyclops.

“I wouldn’t want to see any young maiden go unwed,” she said. “Everyone should have a chance to fall in love.”

“But what if the maiden would rather be alone?” Athena asked. “What if she has other interests, like traveling the world, or becoming a first-class scholar, or . . . or inventing things?”

Aphrodite smiled at her. Poor Athena. She’d never really had a boyfriend. Just wait until she experienced her first crush. She’d think differently then. “If the maiden feels that way, then perhaps it’s only because she hasn’t yet found the right youth,” Aphrodite said kindly.

“But not all youths marry,” Athena pointed out. “So why should all maidens?”

Poseidon thrust his trident into the air. As always, water dripped from it and him to puddle beneath his chair. “That’s because many youths prefer the life of a soldier,” he declared.

“That’s right!” exclaimed another godboy. “War trumps marriage any day.”

Aphrodite rolled her eyes. “Oh, really? And which do you think contributes more to the survival of the human race?”

Mr. Cyclops beamed at her. “Good point.”

Just then the school intercom crackled to life. “Attention, godboys and goddessgirls!” thundered Principal Zeus in a deafeningly loud voice. Everyone, including Mr. Cyclops, automatically reached up to cover their ears. “A special assembly on chariot safety starts in ten minutes. Please make your way to the auditorium.”

Looking somewhat annoyed, Mr. Cyclops muttered something about unwarranted interruptions to class time. But then, with a sigh, he said, “All right, everyone. Please line up at the door.”

Normally, Aphrodite would have welcomed a chance to get out of class, but not today. Not when the topic of discussion was such an interesting one. Besides, the chariot safety assembly was repeated every year, and it was deadly dull. Who among them didn’t know that racing into a turn could cause a chariot to tip over? Duh. Or that you shouldn’t ever fly directly into the sun?

After the assembly, which Zeus had livened up with a real demonstration of racing chariots for a change, it was time for lunch. Aphrodite was starved. As she stood in the cafeteria line with Athena and their other two best friends, dark-haired Artemis and pale-skinned Persephone, her stomach began to rumble like a volcano about to erupt.

Her friends laughed. “Somebody’s hungry,” said Artemis.

Aphrodite blushed. “Yes, very.” She didn’t say it loudly, but considering the response, she might just as well have shouted it. A dozen godboys in line ahead of her whipped around at the sound of her voice, eager to get her attention.

“You can have my spot, Aphrodite!” yelled Poseidon from ten spaces up the line.

He took a step toward her, dripping water onto another godboy’s sandal-clad feet. Ares, who was the cutest godboy in school in Aphrodite’s opinion, glowered at him. “Watch where you’re dripping, Fishface!” Droplets of water flew as he shook one foot and then the other. Poseidon glowered back, his mouth opening and closing like a fish’s.

Ignoring him, Ares turned toward Aphrodite. “Take my place,” he said with a charming smile. “I insist.”

Aphrodite hesitated. Ares could be a bit of a bully at times, but she had to admit there was something about him she found . . . well, irresistible. He was just so muscular, so blond, and so blue eyed. Smiling uncertainly, she took a step in his direction.

Athena grabbed Aphrodite’s elbow. “Surely you’re not going to take him up on that,” she said in a low voice that Ares couldn’t hear. “It wouldn’t be fair to the other goddessgirls in line ahead of us.”

“Oh. I guess you’re right,” said Aphrodite. She’d just stepped back in line when a godboy named Atlas called out. “Hey, Aphrodite! Come stand by me!” Flexing his bulging biceps, he picked up the scrawny godboy next to him and held him over his head. “You can have Hephaestus’s place.”

Squirming this way and that, Hephaestus protested. “Put me down, you big ox.”

Aphrodite sighed. “For the love of Zeus! Leave him alone, Atlas.”

Atlas shrugged. “If you say so.” He set Hephaestus down, but not before a fight broke out between Poseidon and Ares.

“Godness!” exclaimed Persephone, anxiously twisting a red curl around her index finger. “Someone’s going to get hurt!”

Frowning, Aphrodite took a step toward the boys. “Persephone’s right. Stop it! What are you—in kindergarten?”

Sheepishly, the two godboys separated. In a voice as lovely as she was, but which permitted no argument, she said, “I appreciate the offers, but I’ll wait my turn like everyone else.”

Ten minutes later, when she was seated at last with her three goddessgirl friends at their favorite table in the lunchroom, Aphrodite dipped her spoon into the delicious yambrosia. After she’d taken only a bite or two, however, she shoved the bowl away, too annoyed to finish in spite of her hunger.

“Full already?” asked Artemis, as she dug with gusto into her own bowl. Her three dogs, a bloodhound, a greyhound, and a beagle, lay at her feet. They accompanied her everywhere.

“No, just fed up with godboys,” Aphrodite declared. “They’re so obsessed with weapons and war. They even battle for my attention!”

“Poor you,” Persephone teased between sips of nectar. “A lot of goddessgirls would die to have godboys notice them.” As an afterthought, she added, “But of course they can’t, since they’re all immortal.”

Athena set down the shimmery blue Beauty-ology textscroll she’d been scanning as she ate. With a puzzled look she said to Aphrodite, “But I thought you liked the attention.”

Aphrodite shrugged. “Not really. If another godboy offers to carry my scrolls or to help me with my homework just one more time today, I swear I’ll scream!”

“Really?” Athena leaned forward, her brows knit. “But in Hero-ology class you said that everyone should have the chance to fall in love.”

“I was talking about mortals,” said Aphrodite. “And anyway, just because a godboy fusses over you, it doesn’t mean he’s in love with you.” Indeed, she couldn’t help wondering if the handsome young godboys who fluttered around her like moths to a flame might disappear in a flash if she weren’t beautiful. There was no way to know because she’d always been . . . well . . . naturally pretty.

“But most girls like it when boys fuss over them,” Athena persisted. She seemed oddly interested in the topic given her protest that “some maidens” would rather be left alone to study.

Aphrodite raised one of her perfectly shaped eyebrows. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think maybe you wanted to be fussed over.”

“Who me? Ha!” said Athena. “That’s the last thing on my mind,” she murmured as she buried her nose in her Beauty-ology scroll again.

Aphrodite traded amused glances with Persephone and Artemis, who then quickly moved on to talk about other things. But Aphrodite only half listened as she stared at Athena’s bent head. A straight-A student, Athena was easily the brightest of the four friends. She was also the youngest, though they were all in the same grade. Until this moment, Athena had never shown any curiosity about godboys, and they in turn, probably sensing her indifference, overlooked her.

Athena glanced up from her textscroll. “What?” she asked. “Why are you staring at me like that?”

“No reason,” Aphrodite said lightly. But as Athena returned to her textscroll, the wheels in Aphrodite’s brain began to spin faster than the racing chariot Zeus had driven in assembly that morning. Within moments she concluded that Athena had in fact been hinting that she’d welcome the attention of godboys. And while Aphrodite might be fed up with godboys’ annoying antics, she loved stirring up romance for others! True, things hadn’t worked out so well between Paris and Helen—that pesky Trojan War and all—but at least she’d tried to set them up.

That’s it! she thought excitedly. If she could help mortals find love, then why not a goddessgirl, too? She could use her talents to help Athena find her first crush! But she would need a game plan.

Aphrodite drummed her well-manicured, powder-pink-polished fingernails on the tabletop, sneaking glances at Athena’s long, unstyled, brown hair. At her face free of makeup. At her frumpy, plain white chiton. Suddenly an idea came to her. A makeover! That was exactly what her friend needed to make MOA’s godboys sit up and take notice.

Now that she’d come up with a plan, Aphrodite couldn’t wait to get started!

Charming series
By Jennifer Rummel - YABookNerd
When Aphrodite walks into a room - all conversation from godboys stops. They all turn to look at her. While she loves the idea of love and matchmaking, she hates all the attention.

She decides to help Athena and give her a makeover. Aphrodite does such an amazing job that soon all the godboys flock to Athena instead. Aphrodite isn't sure she likes the change in behavior.

In fact, she might be a tad bit jealous of all the attention her friend's getting. How can she get things to change back to normal without causing a rift with one of her best friends?

My Thoughts: A cute tween tale that focuses on jealously and boy mixed with friendship. Aphrodite and Athena have plenty of misunderstandings and miscommunication- including eavesdropping between them. I love this series for the potential romance between the goddess girls and the godboys, for the strong friendship between the goddess girls, and for the fun twists on mythology.

3.5 stars from Small Review blog
By small review
Like all the books in the Goddess Girls series, Aphrodite the Beauty can be read as a standalone and it is not necessary to have read the previous books.

I liked this book, but not as much as the previous two. The story was solid and continues with the excellent blend of mythology and real-life issues that I have come to expect from this series. The only drawback for me was Aphrodite herself. I didn't relate as well to her as a character and I found her to have a little less depth than Athena or Persephone. I also didn't like the way she treated a certain character, but her actions were consistent with mythology and creatively adapted to a more modern and younger audience.

Plus, her feelings and actions, while perhaps not the nicest, were feelings that I'm sure many girls experience (I know I did! And I behaved much the same way when I was that age.) Despite my qualms with Aphrodite herself, her story was cute and I'm sure will ring true with many MG girls (probably not so much boys). Hephaestus makes an appearance as an adorable secondary character.

Fun story!

Review by This Kid Reviews Books! Find me on the web!

Aphrodite is so beautiful that when a god-boy looks at her, he falls in love with her. When she gives Athena a make-over, Athena starts to get all the attention. Aphrodite starts to feel jealous of her friend. When Ares falls for Athena, Aphrodite gets very upset at her friend. Aphrodite wants everything to go back to the way it was without loosing Athena's friendship. But what can she do?

The Goddess Girls seems to be a series written for girls 8+ years old (and I'm a boy) and the mythology in the books doesn't really follow the actual story (I am a fan of mythology). So why do I like these books so much that I am going to read the rest of the series? Well, for one thing they're funny, I actually like how the myths were twisted! I also liked how the stories are a parody of the greek goddesses (and gods) lives as if they were pre-teens today (but in ancient Greece). The stories are written well and deal with some of the same issues all pre-teens go through -just in a Mount Olympus, immortal kind of way ! The books are fun to read and not super challenging so they would also be good for younger advanced readers. So if you can get over the fact that Medusa isn't cursed by Athena who turns her beautiful hair into hideous snakes but rather Medusa mistakenly uses Athena's "snakey-poo" shampoo that turns her hair into snakes, you'll like the book. It isn't mythology, it's a good story. Maybe it will also get kids interested in reading about the actual myths too!

Out of This Earth: East India Adivasis and the Aluminium Cartel, by Felix Padel, Samarendra Das

Capping the biggest mountains in south Odisha are some of the world s best deposits of Bauxite, the ore for aluminium mineral wealth to bring prosperity to one of India s poorest states. But for tribal people who have lived around them since history began, these mountains are sacred not a resource to be exploited, but a source of life itself, through the water they store, and release in perennial streams.

So metal factories, built in tribal areas with a view to mining the mountain summits, are seen as a new colonial invasion, to be resisted. Thousands of Adivasis have already been displaced, in a process of cultural genocide, that involves notorious scams, and corrupts the values of civil society at the same time as wasting irreplaceable resources.

Aluminium is a metal we take for granted in hundreds of artefacts. But what do we understand about its real costs? This book traces a hidden history, coming alive through hundreds of voices and stories, of how one country after another swallowed promises of prosperity, and plunged into a cycle of exploitation and unrepayable debt. What is the link between the massive meltdown of Iceland s banks, and the promotion of dams and smelters? Between the mafia-style looting of Russia s assets and the rise to power of a succession of aluminium barons? Why did the US set a limit during the 1950s-60s and start to outsource aluminium factories to other, poorer countries, such as Ghana, Guinea, Jamaica, India?

The answer lies in hidden subsidies and prohibitive externality costs .

Making aluminium consumes vast quantities of water and electricity. The industry is driven by a cartel that fuses mining companies, investment bankers, government deals, metals traders and arms manufacturers. Secret deals motivate the projects. Behind these stand metals traders in derivatives, in London and other capitals, whose deals drive the industry through futures contracts.

Adivasis who oppose this invasion of their landscape by aluminium projects in East India face an enemy as remorseless and difficult to fathom as the colonial East India Company. Mining projects are fuelled by an entrenched notion of development so powerful, that democracy and human rights often seem to wither in the face of it.

This penetrating anthropological study uncovers an epic clash of ideologies that pits metals traders against Indian citizens whose lifestyle is a model of long-term sustainability

Unequal City: Race, Schools, and Perceptions of Injustice, by Carla Shedd

Chicago has long struggled with racial residential segregation, high rates of poverty, and deepening class stratification, and it can be a challenging place for adolescents to grow up. Unequal City examines the ways in which Chicago’s most vulnerable residents navigate their neighborhoods, life opportunities, and encounters with the law. In this pioneering analysis of the intersection of race, place, and opportunity, sociologist and criminal justice expert Carla Shedd illuminates how schools either reinforce or ameliorate the social inequalities that shape the worlds of these adolescents.

Shedd draws from an array of data and in-depth interviews with Chicago youth to offer new insight into this understudied group. Focusing on four public high schools with differing student bodies, Shedd reveals how the predominantly low-income African American students at one school encounter obstacles their more affluent, white counterparts on the other side of the city do not face. Teens often travel long distances to attend school which, due to Chicago’s segregated and highly unequal neighborhoods, can involve crossing class, race, and gang lines. As Shedd explains, the disadvantaged teens who traverse these boundaries daily develop a keen “perception of injustice,” or the recognition that their economic and educational opportunities are restricted by their place in the social hierarchy.

Adolescents’ worldviews are also influenced by encounters with law enforcement while traveling to school and during school hours. Shedd tracks the rise of metal detectors, surveillance cameras, and pat-downs at certain Chicago schools. Along with police procedures like stop-and-frisk, these prison-like practices lead to distrust of authority and feelings of powerlessness among the adolescents who experience mistreatment either firsthand or vicariously. Shedd finds that the racial composition of the student body profoundly shapes students’ perceptions of injustice. The more diverse a school is, the more likely its students of color will recognize whether they are subject to discriminatory treatment. By contrast, African American and Hispanic youth whose schools and neighborhoods are both highly segregated and highly policed are less likely to understand their individual and group disadvantage due to their lack of exposure to youth of differing backgrounds.

Syria was once one of the Middle East?s most stable states. Today it is a country on its knees. Almost 200,000 people are estimated to have died in its bloody internal conflict and, as the violence intensifies, Syria?s future looks bleak.

In this timely book, Samer Abboud provides an in-depth analysis of Syria?s descent into civil war. He unravels the complex and multi-layered causes of the current political and military stalemate - from rebel fragmentation to the differing roles of international actors, and the rise of competing centers of power throughout the country. Rebel in-fighting and the lack of a centralizing authority, he contends, have exacerbated Syria?s fragmentation and fragility. This, in turn, has aided the survival of the Assad regime, contributed to the upsurge of sectarianism, and led to a major humanitarian crisis as nine million Syrians have been forced to flee their homes.

A resolution to the Syrian conflict seems unlikely in the short-term as the major actors remains committed to a military solution. As this situation persists, the continued fighting is reshaping Syria?s borders and will have repercussions on the wider Middle East for decades to come.

Review

"This book brings together the phases and dimensions of the Syrian conflict in a uniquely convincing and comprehensive way. This is prefaced by a useful overview of the historical context of the Uprising. The book?s sections on the militarisation of the conflict are especially valuable."
Raymond Hinnebusch, University of St Andrews

Samer Abboud offers a cogent survey of multiple dimensions of the Syrian civil war. Readers will find authoritative, yet accessible, treatments of the radical Islamists of the Assistance Front (Jabhat al-Nusra) and the Islamic State, the innovative Kurdish autonomy projent, the horrendous economic and human costs of the fighting, and the puzzling responses of foreign actors, particularly Russia and the United Nations, among many other crucial topics.

Abboud, Samer N. Syria. Malde, MA: Polity Press, 2016

I am an undergraduate student and have been conducting research on the Syrian refugee and humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. Since this is a current event, I couldn’t find many books on the topic, but with the help of my professor, he guided me towards this helpful source. Samer N. Abboud, a professor of international studies and a man of Arabic descent, eloquently explains the incidents that eventually led to Syria’s five-year civil war. The situation is very complex, yet Abboud sheds light and clarity on the issue by focusing on each factor or party separately. The detailed analysis, which spans a couple chapters, organizes the events in chronological order, making it easy for readers to follow. And towards the end of the book, he even analyzes the humanitarian crisis that has evolved within many of the neighboring Middle Eastern nations and the European Union, broadening the scopes of his scholarship. His information is up-to-date and accurate as he has referenced a number of sources that include academic magazines, international newspapers, and scholarly work from well-renowned universities. I haven’t finished the entirety of this book but it has been quite helpful in my research thus far as it looks at both the history of the crisis and the present-day realities. It is an excellent source for anyone conducting research within this area or just interested in extending their knowledge on his horrific, unfolding event.

This insightful narrative demystifies a complex and terrible conflict

The author of Syria (Hot Spots in Global Politics), is Samer N. Abboud; who is Associate Professor of International Studies at the Department of Historical and Political Studies, Arcadia University Glenside, Pennsylvania, United States.

The author’s book brings together the various events and the many faceted sides to the complexity of the Syrian conflict. This is done in a distinctively cogent and wide-ranging examination. The narrative is preceded by the beneficial summary of the historical background of the Uprising. Sections such as the militarisation of the conflict are of particularly value. The Table of Contents below best illustrates the areas that will be looked at.

Introduction

Chapter One: The Rise and Fall of the Ba'ath Party
Chapter Two: The Syrian Uprising
Chapter Three: The Emergence of Armed Opposition
Chapter Four: When the World Wades In
Chapter Five: Fragmentation
Chapter Six: The Humanitarian Crisis

Conclusion: Prospects for Resolution
Bibliography

The writing style is poised, yet manageable, in its treatments of the radical Islamists and the Islamic State, the Kurdish involvement and their “war objectives”. There are of course the awful economic crisis and humanitarian costs of the war, and then there are the rather disjointed responses of foreign powers, which at times seem to be at odds. Of particular interest are the roles of Russia and the United Nations.

This insightful narrative demystifies a complex and terrible conflict, and should be essential reading for anyone who desires to better comprehend Syria's violent descent into civil war.

Evolution of the Syrian Civil War. Insightful on Political Economy, Odd in Other Ways.
By mirasreviews
“Syria” was written by Samer N. Abboud, Associate Professor of International Studies at Arcadia University, “to help the reader understand the broader dynamics driving the [Syrian civil war], why it has persisted, who the main actors are, and why it has evolved in the way it has.” Mr. Abboud is a scholar of Middle Eastern descent who specializes in the political economy of the Syrian conflict. Here, he examines the “parallel processes of revolution and civil war and their… effects on Syrian state and society.” This study is organized into six chapters, beginning with an overview of Syria from the end of the French mandate in 1946, through the 1963 Ba’athist coup, until the beginning of civil war in 2011. From there, Abboud discusses the first months of the uprising before militarization, the four main violent actors in the war, the international dimensions of the conflict, Syria’s territorial fragmentation, and the humanitarian crisis. He concludes with his own ideas about resolution.

The first chapter, “The Rise and Fall of the Ba’ath Party”, is full of helpful information. It actually begins in the late Ottoman period, when economic reforms created the landlord-merchant class that dominated Syrian politics until the Ba’ath coup of 1963. Abboud describes the unstable political landscape during Syria’s “democratic” years after independence and why and how this led to the Ba’athist coup, which installed a rural-minoritarian and authoritarian-populist government. He traces the struggles of Pres. Hafez al-Assad and then Pres. Bashar al-Assad to adapt Syria’s economy in the face of an increasingly outdated, failing statist model, culminating in neo-liberal reforms beginning in 2000, which “attempted to achieve social welfare through increasingly privatized and marketized mechanisms.” The intent of this “dual-track liberalization” was “to create parallel and competing public and private” sectors. This “disrupted the relationship between state and society.”

Though he does not describe specific policies adopted by Pres. Bashar al-Assad’s government, Abboud provides a clear account of the social and economic turmoil wrought by the shift away from Syria’s socialist policies, causing a deterioration of living standards, high unemployment, and limiting the government’s social role and therefore influence. The Ba’ath Party had abandoned its rural constituents. Large, impoverished, formerly rural populations congregating in slum villages at the outskirts of cities due to declining agricultural productivity has led to more than one civil war. But Abboud comes to the conclusion that the historical suppression of political parties, autonomous civil society, and of opposition caused the protests by leaving no institutions available for the expression of grievances. Perhaps, but it is unclear what influence those things might have on economic policy, if they would be destabilizing, or if protests would have been avoided altogether.

Once Abboud delves into the uprising and eventual war, I felt that the information was of uneven quality –perhaps due to uneven access- and sometimes disingenuous. Abboud is very much opposed to the Syrian government’s policies; he downplays the role of foreign actors in the protests and the war; he exaggerates the influence of parties seeking democratic government; and he underestimates –or misrepresents- the sectarian aspects of the civil war. The war is not sectarian in the sense the Western press has often claimed –that much is true. It’s not Alawites against Sunnis; most of the Syrian Army is Sunni. But it is sectarian in that a defeat of the government, whether by the Islamic State or by pro-Western democrats, will result in a Sunni-dominated government and fears that religious minorities will be forced to leave (e.g. Iraq, Algeria, Israel) or engage in perpetual civil war (e.g. Iraq), as always happens in the Arab world in cases of majority-rule government.

It is difficult to determine exactly when foreign powers first attempted to intervene in Syria and how, as all parties involved want to hide foreign influence. Anti-Iran banners were being waved in Dera’a in April 2011. That looks like Saudi involvement to me, yet Abboud dismisses the Syrian government’s accusations of foreign interlopers so early. He claims the protesters rejected “the regime’s overtures and reforms” because they were hollow. Yes, at first, but substantive reforms were also rejected …because the United States was telling protesters not to negotiate. Abboud seems to approve of accommodationist elements in the government, but the fact is that accommodation had no effect on the protesters’ behavior. He downplays the foreign elements in the Free Syrian Army and Jabhat al-Nusra. Al-Nusra recruited extensively in the Arabian peninsula, and recruits have been interviewed by Western press. Abboud mentions that Qatar was supplying rebels with arms from Libya but doesn’t mention that they were donated by the United States. Likewise, that was American money that the Saudis used to purchase arms from Croatia. He mentions only one military incursion by Turkey; no mention of the roads that the Turkish military built into Syria or the installation of Uigurs from China, with their families, in Latakia governate.

In the chapter about the beginnings of the uprising, the author describes the three main networks that emerged from the opposition and the government’s response to them: Local Coordinated Committees (LCCs), which were established to organized protesters, the Syrian National Council (SNC), and the Free Syrian Army (FSA). A chapter on the armed opposition looks at the FSA, Jabhat al-Nusra, the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), and the Islamic State. There is not much about internal organization, rather the author focuses on whom these groups were/are fighting, admitting that any “façade of rebel coherence” had disappeared by the end of 2012. On the side of the Syrian government, Abboud discusses the increasingly privatized and decentralized quality of its defenders, as the Syrian Army has been decimated. There is some brief discussion of Hezbollah and of the emergence of warlords on all sides of the conflict.

A chapter on the fragmentation of Syria begins well with a detailed description of the administrative structure of the Kurdish Canton-Based Democratic Autonomy of Rojava, but Abboud provides less detailed information on the Islamic State, Jabhat al-Nusra or the various rebel-controlled regions in Southern Syria. This may be due to lack of access. Sami Moubayed was able to interview some citizens and soldiers living under the Islamic State for his book “Under the Black Flag” (2015), which is a reasonably good source of information on Islamic State administration. Abboud tackles the humanitarian crisis in Syria in his last chapter, which looks at the experience of refugees in neighboring nations but does not cover those who have fled to government-held territory in Syria, though they are easy to access. Abboud says that Germany was taking very few refugees, which changed in 2015, making me wonder exactly when this book was completed.

Obviously, Samer Abboud has a point of view –you couldn’t very well write a book without one- and I don’t share it. Abboud specializes in political economy, and that is where “Syria” excels. You can find some of his work on Carnegie’s Middle East Center’s web site and some academic papers through Google. I highly recommend the first chapter of “Syria” as an introduction to the economic roots of the Syrian Civil War. I found some blanket statements in subsequent chapters to be misleading. The statements and omissions with which I take issue concern Abboud’s dismissal of foreign intervention as a major impetus toward civil war, what I believe to be an exaggeration of the importance of democratic elements in Syria, and omission of any explanation of why the Syrian government saw –and continues to see- the hand of the Muslim Brotherhood behind the whole mess. I intend to read more of Mr. Abboud’s work on political economy, but this book gets only a tepid recommendation.

Pebbles in the Road takes you inside the extraordinary experiences of joy, sorrow, strength, hope and survival in one woman’s life. This story will wrench at the heart.

From a mediocre childhood through the 50s and 60s in Brisbane to disappointing relationships, the joy of motherhood, and the love and loss of a son ... these are the happenings that have shaped a life.

Readers will be able to relate to what it was like growing up in a time when children could be children and those too young to know will enjoy the anecdotes of an era filled with things we take for granted now.

This story is about finding strength in the face of the greatest adversity and the courage to make choices. During challenging times in our life, ultimately we are responsible for our own well-being and happiness.

When doctors told me I should leave my baby at the hospital to die, I had to draw upon all the experiences of my life—good and bad—to prove them wrong.

I was raised in the Brisbane suburb of Salisbury during the 1950s and although my parents were loving, I experienced emotional and physical abuse from them and from my older sister Genia. It has taken me many years to realise that’s what it was—at the time I thought my experiences were normal.

As I grew older, I attracted men into my life who continued this pattern of neglect, abuse and mistreatment. When my firstborn son, Gavin, was diagnosed with a fatal heart condition, I had to rely on myself for our survival.

Within the environment of neglectful relationships, I struggled to be a good parent to Gavin and my other children. I lived in near-constant fear that Gavin’s next hospital visit would be his last.

Pebbles is about growing up, finding the strength within you to face life’s trials, a mother’s love and the courage of a young boy whose heart, though fatally flawed, was the gentlest, most loving heart I’ve ever known.

Hi Ryll, just had to send my congratulations on a truly wonderful book. I just couldn’t put it down, and will pass it on to my Mum and my sisters. Now hurry up and write the next book!!!!!
Take care M.

Thank you Ryll,– I have just finished reading Pebbles in the Road, Which I got from you on Saturday. What a wonderful read it has been, I have been taken on a life journey that has been an amazing mixture of emotions and happenings. I have laughed and cried all the way through your life story. I don’t read too many books-and mostly Philosophical or educational books, and I tend to take a long time to read them. Your book was different ! I read it in just a few sessions, I found it to be gripping! Your life has touched many people in deep ways. What a blessing for you to have had Gavin,–such an amazing young man. I would say that with all the difficulties you have endured in your life, they have been necessary for you to be the Woman you are today. I thank you for a memorable reading experience.
Sincerely B. W.

Hi Ryll,
I don’t normally contact authors or write letters to newspapers or blog but this time I felt I must. Just read your book. It was like a trip back in time. i was born in ‘54 and lived on the same side of town so I really identified with the places you spoke of and the way we lived as kids. Like you I had some rocky relationships and also I had my first child in the ‘70s (or rather my wife did), fortunately he enjoyed good health and now has children of his own. I was moved to tears to read of your son’s death though at least you had him a lot longer than the doctors predicted. I now reside in Adelaide, but reading your book made me yearn for Brisbane.

To the Author:

Hi Ryll, I have finished your book. You have done a great job in dipicting who you were as a young person. I could really get the sense of your persona from the writing.

I liked how you did explanations of things when the need arose, it became somewhat educational and will be important for future generations to see what is was really like back then.

Your incredible dedication to Gavin gave him 17 precious years with you. He is a shining example of love at it's best. I am so delighted that you were able to have such strong intuitions and act on them.

I laughed and cried at different points along the way. I identified with some events as well.

I hope young women can read about your relationships and stop themselves from going down the same path. Even if it helps just one, it will have been absolutely worth it.

Perhaps a sequel should be in order taken from where you left off.

I didn't want to put this well written book down.

Love and light, Kirsty

that was a beautiful read. Though there was no mystery
By Neelima
Ryll, that was a beautiful read. Though there was no mystery, it was still a page turner. It kept me awed as to how many woman would stand up in front of a mirror and ever reflect on there past the way you did.
It was truly inspiring.
I just kept wondering , writing about Gavin was a meaningful thought. It would have given a lot of solace to you and many others in the same boat where you constantly are unsure ,if that was the right thing to do. But the way you intertwined your relationships with parents, siblings, friends and spouses without diluting your care as a mother and keeping yourself motivated and financially secured was truly inspiring..
I do look forward to read ....life after Gavin
