About the Author

Jim Doherty is the Chief Marketing Officer at CipherOptics. Before joining the CipherOptics team, he held leadership positions with Symbol Technologies and Cisco Systems. He has more than 16 years of technical marketing and engineering experience and has led various marketing campaigns for IP telephony, routing and switching solutions, and network security solutions. He is the coauthor of the Networking Simplifiedseries, published by Cisco Press. He is a former Marine Corps sergeant. He holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University and an MBA from Duke University.

 

Neil Anderson is the Senior Manager of Technology Systems Engineering with Cisco Systems. He has more than 20 years of broad engineering experience, including public telephone systems, mobile phone systems, Internet, and home networking. At Cisco, his focus is on business networks in the areas of network architecture, wireless, security, unified communications, and emerging technologies. He is the coauthor of the Networking Simplified series, published by Cisco Press. He holds a B.S. in computer science.

Book for novice

I was disappointed in this book since I expected it to be more like a Cisco cheat sheet or refresher. This book is for novice only. It describes very basic/beginner materials for easy understanding. If you have general knowledge and experience in networking, this book will not benefit you. Also it's not really Cisco Networking Simplified, it's general networking simplified...not much Cisco in it. However I'm sure everyone will find something interesting in the book. May be nothing new but some theory for general understanding of "noteveryday" technology; also interesting facts, history and statistics of different technologies.

A very good book for tech managers

I found in this book everything that I needed to know about networking technology. I was looking for a book with updated information about connecting computers in network using switches, routers and etc. and this book was very helpful. It tells us much more about networking in general than about Cisco's networking products. I recommend it for tech managers that need a very good technology overview, also clearly written and well illustrated.

I purchased this book to learn more about networking, and you will learn
quite alot from it. Every subject is covered, from the beginning of the
Internet to present-day systems, including legacy devices and topologies.
If you are looking for a book to show you how to network YOUR setup, this
can help, but is not the focus and subject of this book.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants a good understanding of network-
ing principles, methodologies, and implementation from a LAN to WAN scale.
This book does require some intelligence regarding the subjects, and will
be useful for an intermediate to advanced user.

Got this for a 7 year old almost 2nd grader who has a bit of a lying problem. We have her read it to us every time she doesn't tell us the truth. She'll be so sick of it, and it has improved both her reading, word recognition, and fibbing. ;)

Unsurprising but helpful advice from someone who has been there.

As the father of a high school junior, I have a front-row seat for the pursuit of the college dream. Like many kids near the top of their high school class, my son is a shoo-in for acceptance to the vast majority of colleges in the U.S. But when it comes to competitive scholarships and acceptance to that small percentage of elite schools, the odds are not in his favor. Truth be told, the odds are against anyone getting into some of the elite colleges, with acceptance rates in the single digits.

Into that fray enters Aayush Upadhyay, a recent Yale grad who has crunched some numbers and has valuable insights for high school students whose sights are set on the Ivy League. None of Upadhyay's conclusions will shock the reader. The higher the rank, the higher the test scores, the better the chances for admission. He sheds some light on some of the more subjective elements, like extracurriculars (multiple years in one activity tends to beat short tenures in multiple activities), but, again, nothing too surprising.

Upadhyay's analysis and conclusions are worth reading for applicants to Ivy League schools. I was left with the feeling that unless GPA, class rank, and test scores aren't top-notch, the rest of the application will never matter. Behind the Ivy Curtain feeds into the growing perception of ambitious high school students that admission to an Ivy League school is the only route to success in academics and life. I hope my son and others like him will realize that while Ivy League schools may provide a great academic experience, there are plenty of other schools around the country where excellent academics, excellent professional development and networking, excellent character building, and excellent life experiences can be found.

Combining quantitative analysis with qualitative experience, Behind the Ivy Curtain presents an information-dense overview of the college admissions process for high-achieving students and their parents.

For students aiming at top colleges, Behind the Ivy Curtain helps answer questions such as:
* How many AP exams should I take?
* What score do I need on the SAT / ACT?
* What role does my guidance counselor play in the admissions process?
* How does a college admissions committee handle my application?
* Do I need to go to a private or public school?
* Should I try to be recruited as an athlete?
* How important are extracurriculars vs. a top GPA?
* How should I approach the essay portion of the application?

Upadhyay's casual and simplifying voice makes it an easy read (~2 hours start to finish). The data is there for you to dig into, but the takeaways are also neatly summarized if you'd rather not. I recommend Behind the Ivy Curtain to all kids applying to college, and their parents. It's a small investment of time, and there's a lot of useful stuff in there.

Upadhyay's short, information-packed read is probably the one of the best two hours you can spend on college admissions research. It gives students data-backed answers to questions everyone asks, like "Should I retake the SAT?" or "How important are those volunteer hours?". The quantitative bent definitely makes this book different from others, so for the more analytical student the information is both easier to parse and more convincing. Upadhyay's writing style is casual and concise, making the book entertaining while being informative.

This book is definitely most useful when read as a high school underclassman who is serious about getting into some of the best schools in the country. It gives a lot of advice about how to use your high school years, so reading it as a college senior, while still useful for the essay and testing-taking sections, doesn't give you opportunity to change behavior based on all the statistics and ideas covered.

Shannon McRae, PhD has a graduate degree and a long background in psychology as well as a doctorate in holistic nutrition from the American Holistic College of Nutrition. She has an ongoing feature column about intuitive medicine and energy healing in the Well Being Journal.

you will find this book of great value. Maybe it's me

For 30 years I have read everything I can find on healing in relationship to quantum physics. Some books have opened my mind, some have offered me only a sliver, it all depends where we are on our path and what we are ready to hear. McRae just blows it out of the ball park on this one! The sense of hope and possibility is present in every sentence. You can take it, or leave it, it's your call, your mind, your desire to heal. But if your desire to heal is sincere, you will find this book of great value. Maybe it's me, maybe it was just time for things to really click for me, but I do think this book helped facilitate that key finally turning. I've been vigilant about my own thoughts that are counter to healing in a way that is finally cutting through the mire and moving towards something healthier, as a result of reading this book. Different healers reach different people, for me this book opened wide the confirmation that we have the ability to heal ourselves. Is it easy? No, it takes vigilance and constant monitoring of our thoughts, but if we are willing to do so, this book greatly assists in helping us move in that direction. If you want proof, or think that things in the quantum are too iffy, please still consider giving this book a chance. If you wait until you %100 believe you can heal yourself, you are probably waiting while your healing is on hold waiting too. If we have sincere intent to heal, this book will get you started on that path.

An artist's imagination run wild!!!!

I haven't gotten myself to be able to read comics online yet so this hardcover collection of Tom Scioli's web series AMERICAN BARBARIAN was greatly anticipated! I loved it! Scioli's imagination is completely let loose and on display! AMERICAN BARBARIAN is a story of revenge featuring a warrior in a post-post-apocalyptic future (I love that description). How can you not love a comic with a villain named Two Tank Omen?

I really enjoyed the format and feel of the book (slightly smaller than a typical modern comicbook). If you're already familiar with Scioli's work, this is can't miss. If you're not familiar, get acquainted!

American Barbarian is Tom Scioli doing what he does best.

Tom Scioli is one of the best artists in comics because he understands that the visuals are the means of delivering a narrative and not an end unto themselves. His art is quite good and evokes an earlier time when comic books knew the difference between seriousness and grimness. His concepts are fresh and delivered with an obvious enthusiasm of an artist fully engaged in his work.

Great silly fun. This is part Thundarr the Barbarian, part He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, part Star Wars, part Fire and Ice, all done as if it were channeled through Jack Kirby. The art looks like a 13-year-old did it trying very hard to imitate Jack Kirby, and for some reason I don't mean that in a bad way because for some reason that means my eyes never get tired of looking at it--there is always something interesting, shocking, funny, or amazing on every page.
